Qualifications

• 8-10 years of backend engineering experience
• Hands-on designing and scaling distributed backend systems with RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs
• Proven track record architecting shared backend platforms across products
• Production experience with major cloud providers (GCP/AWS/Azure)
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines
• Proficiency in at least one modern backend language (Go/Java/Node.js/Python)
• Strong data modeling, caching, and scalability trade-offs in distributed environments

Responsibilities

• Define and own backend architecture across core platform, content & discovery, commerce & growth, and platform services (22+ microservices)
• Make foundational technology decisions on service boundaries, data modeling, API design, caching, and scalability
• Own architecture for core services: authentication, user profile, feed, recommendations, search, content APIs
• Define application-level security standards in partnership with Platform Engineer
• Own deployment architecture and release strategy for backend services; collaborate on orchestration and CI/CD
• Collaborate with Frontend Architect and Platform Engineer to define clean API contracts and integration patterns
• Conduct architecture and code reviews; set code quality bars and architectural guardrails
• Evaluate and introduce backend technologies/tools to improve velocity, performance, or maintainability

Position Overview

The company is building a media super-app that unifies video, audio, radio, micro-drama, news, and commerce on a single platform. The Backend Architect will own end-to-end technical architecture for a backend platform spanning 22+ services across six content and commerce verticals. This is a foundational individual-contributor leadership role - setting the architectural direction, standards, and scalability strategy that the entire Backend Engineering team builds against.

Role & Responsibilities

• Define and own backend technical architecture across core platform, content & discovery, commerce & growth, and platform services spanning 22+ microservices
• Make foundational technology decisions on service boundaries, data modeling, API design, caching, and scalability strategy as new verticals are added
• Own architecture for core services including authentication, user profile, feed, recommendations, search, and content APIs
• Define application-level security standards - authentication, authorization, and data protection - in partnership with the Platform Engineer
• Own deployment architecture and release strategy for backend services; partner with the Platform Engineer on orchestration and CI/CD
• Partner with the Frontend Architect and Platform Engineer to define clean API contracts and integration patterns across the stack
• Conduct architecture and code reviews for high-impact changes; set code quality bars and architectural guardrails for the Backend Engineering team
• Evaluate and introduce backend technologies and tools that meaningfully improve velocity, performance, or maintainability as the platform scales beyond Phase 1

Must Have Criteria

• 8-10 years of backend engineering experience, including 2-3+ years in a formal architecture, staff, or principal engineering capacity
• Hands-on expertise designing and scaling distributed backend systems with RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs at consumer scale (high read/write throughput)
• Proven track record architecting shared backend platforms serving multiple products or business verticals simultaneously
• Production experience with at least one major cloud provider - GCP, AWS, or Azure - for deploying and operating large-scale systems
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines for deployment and orchestration of backend services
• Proficiency in at least one modern backend language - Go, Java, Node.js, or Python - used in production at scale
• Strong command of data modeling, caching strategies, service decomposition, and system scalability trade-offs in distributed environments

Nice to Have

• Experience in a media, content, or commerce super-app environment
• Prior experience at a high-growth startup building 0-1 platforms
• Familiarity with recommendation systems, search infrastructure, or content delivery at scale
• Experience with cloud-native architecture (GCP preferred) and microservices design patterns
