Responsibilities

  • Develop, validate, and enhance transformer electrical design programs; benchmark outputs against test results.
  • Author and harmonize engineering design manuals against IEEE C57 and IEC 60076; resolve conflicts between standards.
  • Perform dielectric design and verification: insulation structures, clearances, BIL/BSL coordination, and impulse test configs for windings.
  • Conduct FEM-based electrostatic, magnetic, and thermal analysis for gradients and losses.
  • Support test floor disputes with root-cause analysis and formal reports.
  • Lead vendor and material qualification with gap analyses and type-test reviews.
  • Automate engineering workflows: calculators, solvers, and validation workbooks for team release.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Electrical Development Engineer — Power Transformers

Team: Electrical Development, Analysis & Automation |Reports to: Development Manager – Engineering |Location: On-site

Role Summary

The Electrical Development Engineer works within the central development and analysis group supporting power and autotransformer designs up to 345 kV / 315 MVA across multiple manufacturing plants. The position focuses on the engineering behind the design system itself: validating and enhancing design tools, harmonizing engineering manuals with the latest IEEE and IEC standards, performing advanced electromagnetic and dielectric analysis, resolving field and test-floor technical disputes, and qualifying new materials and components. The engineer works from first principles, benchmarks calculations against test data and legacy software, and converts findings into released standards, validated tools, and defensible technical reports.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, validate, and enhance transformer electrical design programs; benchmark outputs against factory test results and reference designs.
  • Author and harmonize engineering design manuals against current IEEE C57 and IEC 60076 series; identify and resolve conflicts between internal and industry standards.
  • Perform dielectric design and verification: internal insulation structures, external air clearances, BIL/BSL coordination, and impulse test configurations for wye and delta windings.
  • Conduct FEM-based electrostatic, magnetic, and thermal analysis for gradients, stray loss, GIC, overexcitation, and short-circuit electrodynamic stability.
  • Support test floor and customer technical disputes with root-cause analysis and formal engineering reports;
  • Lead vendor and material qualification with gap analyses, TCR documentation, and type-test review against IEEE/IEC/UL requirements.
  • Automate engineering workflows: calculation tools, solvers, and validation workbooks documented for team-wide release.

Key Skills — Shortlisting Criteria

Design & Analysis

  • Power transformer electrical design (core, winding, loss, impedance, cooling) up to 345 kV class
  • Dielectric stress analysis — oil/pressboard insulation structures, creep and strike distances
  • Electrostatic field plotting and gradient analysis (winding-to-winding, lead systems, DETC regions)
  • ANSYS Maxwell (2D/3D electrostatic, magnetostatic, eddy current / stray loss)
  • Impulse voltage distribution / transient analysis — lightning, chopped wave, switching impulse (VLN / ladder-network winding models; ATP-EMTP exposure)
  • Short-circuit force and electrodynamic stability analysis (Andersen FLD12, ELDINST or equivalent)
  • Thermal / hot-spot analysis, GIC thermal effects, overexcitation (V/Hz) capability per IEEE C57.107
  • Sound level (load noise) prediction and R&D

Standards & Compliance

  • IEEE C57.12.00, C57.12.90 working knowledge; IEC 60076 series (Parts 1–5)

Tools & Automation

  • Python and/or VBA for engineering calculation tools; advanced Excel (validation workbooks, design calculators)

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Master's preferred) with 5–10 years in power/distribution transformer design or development engineering. Publications, standards-committee participation, or advanced analysis portfolio are strong differentiators.
