PeopleStrong in Mumbai, India, is seeking an experienced EHS Engineer to ensure safe execution of excavation and underground works by enforcing policies, conducting risk assessments, and leading site inspections.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering (DCE) or BTech in Civil Engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of excavation safety and risk assessment.
  • Experience in HIRA/JSA for excavation activities.
  • Familiarity with PTW systems and permits.
  • Willingness to conduct toolbox talks and site inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and perform HIRA/JSA for all excavation activities.
  • Review and approve method statements for excavation, trenching, pipe laying, and backfilling.
  • Identify and ensure marking of underground utilities before work; implement PTW system.
  • Ensure proper excavation permits and confined space permits where applicable.
  • Verify site safety conditions before permit approval; ensure barricading and edge protection.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections for excavation lines; monitor trench stability and water accumulation.
  • Coordinate with site engineers, contractors, and utility providers to ensure safety controls are implemented.
  • Investigate incidents and near misses; perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.

Job Description

To ensure safe execution of excavation, trenching, and underground utility works by implementing EHS policies, identifying hazards, and enforcing safety controls to prevent incidents such as trench collapse, utility damage, and injury.Key Roles & Responsibilities- Planning & Risk Assessment.

  • Conduct HIRA / JSA for all excavation activities
  • Review and approve method statements for:
  • Excavation
  • Trenching
  • Pipe laying and backfilling
  • Identify and ensure marking of underground utilities before work 1. Permit-to-Work (PTW) System. Ensure proper issuance and control of:
  • Excavation permits
  • Confined space permits (if applicable) Verify site safety conditions before permit approval. 2. Excavation Safety Implementation. Ensure:
  • Proper barricading, edge protection, and signage
  • Safe sloping, shoring, or benching systems
  • Maintain safe distance of excavated soil from trench edges
  • Provide safe access/egress (ladders, ramps)Site Monitoring & Inspection
  • Conduct daily safety inspections for excavation lines Monitor:
  • Trench stability
  • Water accumulation / dewatering
  • Movement of heavy equipment
  • Identify unsafe conditions and take corrective actions3. Worker Safety & Training
  • Ensure PPE compliance:
  • Helmet, safety shoes, reflective jacket, gloves
  • Conduct toolbox talks on:
  • Trench collapse
  • Equipment safety
  • Utility hazards4.Traffic & Public Safety
  • Implement traffic management plans for road excavations
  • Ensure safety of pedestrians/public near excavation areas Provide barricades, reflective tapes, warning lights, and flagmen5.Emergency Preparedness
  • Develop emergency response plans for:
  • Trench collapse
  • Worker entrapment
  • Ensure availability of rescue equipment and trained personnel Conduct mock drills6.Compliance & Documentation
  • Ensure compliance with:
  • Company EHS standards (e.g., L&T guidelines)
  • Legal/statutory requirementsMaintain:
  • Inspection checklists
  • PTW records
  • Incident/near miss reports7. Incident Investigation
  • Investigate accidents and near misses
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
  • Implement corrective and preventive measures8. CoordinationCoordinate with:
  • Site engineers
  • Contractors and subcontractors
  • Utility service providers
  • Ensure all safety controls are implemented effectively
