Digital Product Engineer
The Digital Product Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable digital products and web-based platforms that support Vital Strategies’ public health programs and the Office of Global Innovation’s digital strategy. This is an individual‑contributor role that requires technical expertise with a general understanding of the social sector.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Senior Digital Product Manager to design, develop, test, and maintain web applications and RESTful APIs using Python.
- Develop backend services with FastAPI (or similar frameworks such as Django or Flask) ensuring scalability, performance, and security.
- Design and implement secure backend services following application security best practices.
- Build and maintain frontend applications with ReactJS (or similar frameworks).
- Create responsive, user‑friendly interfaces with a focus on usability and performance (WCAG standards).
- Implement interactive data visualizations and dashboards for internal and external users.
- Integrate frontend applications with backend APIs and data services for seamless functionality.
- Collaborate with data science teams to translate analytical outputs into user‑facing tools.
- Support database design, querying, and optimization using PostgreSQL.
- Contribute to code quality through documentation, version control, and active participation in code reviews.
- Ensure products perform reliably on low‑bandwidth and under‑resourced infrastructure.
- Contribute to documentation accessible to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Support user testing, iteration, and deployment of digital solutions in collaboration with product and program teams.
- Contribute to open‑source repositories and shared codebases following best practices and governance standards.
- Support planning, development, and deployment of digital products within the Innovation Hub.
- Prepare technical documentation, system reports, and knowledge‑sharing materials.
- Maintain APIs and processing pipelines already implemented as digital products.
- Document architecture, technical solutions, and lessons learned to strengthen institutional knowledge.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong proficiency in Python for backend development.
- Experience with backend frameworks (FastAPI, Django, or Flask).
- Experience with ReactJS or similar frontend frameworks.
- Strong proficiency in RESTful API design.
- Experience with PostgreSQL or relational databases.
- Familiarity with Git and collaborative development workflows.
- Knowledge of software testing principles, including unit, integration, and end‑to‑end testing concepts.
- Understanding of application security principles (OWASP fundamentals).
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS or Azure).
- Strong customer service orientation and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
- Time management and organization skills to prioritize work and meet project deadlines.
- Adaptability and flexibility to adjust to shifting project goals.
- Attention to detail, active listening, and strong follow‑up for accuracy and thoroughness.
Preferred
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker).
- Experience with data visualization libraries.
- Familiarity with open‑source practices.
- Knowledge of secure development practices (e.g., OWASP fundamentals).
- Knowledge of responsive design and accessibility (WCAG).
Experience
- Minimum 8 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in public health, government, or social‑impact sectors.
- Demonstrable experience building and deploying production‑level web applications.
- Experience working in cross‑functional teams (product, data, design).
- Experience handling sensitive or health‑related data and knowledge of data protection standards.
- Familiarity with digital health standards such as FHIR or DHIS2.
- Experience working with distributed global teams.
- Experience building solutions designed for low‑resource or low‑connectivity environments.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Ability to travel for work meetings — approximately 20% travel.
- Regular collaboration with distributed team members across multiple time zones.
- Occasional international travel may be required for team meetings or project deployments.
