We are seeking an experienced Technical Web Platform Lead to take ownership of the technical operation, development and continuous improvement of a large, high-traffic public-facing website and its supporting digital platforms. This role would suit a senior web developer, technical lead or platform specialist who combines strong hands-on development skills with experience managing technical projects, third-party suppliers, DevOps processes and business stakeholders.

The position will initially operate as a senior individual contributor role, with the opportunity to develop into a formal people management position as the team grows.

The Role

You will have responsibility for the technical performance, reliability, security and ongoing development of the organisation's primary website and associated digital platforms.

  • Leading web development and digital platform projects from initial requirements through to implementation
  • Managing the day-day technical operation of a large, business-critical website
  • Monitoring website uptime, reliability, security and performance
  • Acting as the escalation point for complex technical issues
  • Developing new website functionality, integrations, modules and platform enhancements
  • Maintaining and improving HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript code
  • Designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and automated testing processes
  • Managing source control, deployment and release processes using GitLab or similar tools
  • Developing integrations and automations using APIs
  • Supporting cloud-hosted applications, storage, networking and security
  • Managing the cybersecurity posture of web and digital platforms
  • Maintaining certificates, SSO configurations, user accounts and access controls
  • Supporting cookie consent, data protection and web compliance requirements
  • Managing third-party technology suppliers and external development partners
  • Gathering technical requirements from internal stakeholders and translating them into practical solutions
  • Supporting analytics, reporting and Business Intelligence initiatives
  • Configuring web analytics, metadata, event tracking and tag management
  • Contributing to business continuity and disaster recovery planning
  • Reviewing emerging technologies, including AI tools and automation opportunities
  • Supporting technical procurement and the evaluation of new platforms
  • Mentoring team members and potentially taking on direct reports as the function grows
Essential Experience
  • At least five years' experience in frontend, backend or full-stack software development
  • Strong hands-on experience with HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript
  • Experience designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines using GitLab, GitHub, Azure DevOps or a comparable tool
  • Experience leading successful web development projects
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle
  • Experience working with enterprise websites or other high-traffic digital platforms
  • Strong stakeholder communication and requirements-gathering skills
  • Experience coordinating external suppliers, contractors or development partners
  • A good understanding of website performance, reliability and security
Desirable Experience
  • Experience developing modules, templates or plugins for an enterprise CMS
  • Cloud architecture or cloud platform experience
  • Cybersecurity monitoring, penetration testing, hardening or vulnerability management
  • Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager
  • Cookie consent and data protection compliance
  • API development and systems integration
  • Automated testing and DevOps practices
  • Website monitoring, performance and SEO tools
  • Business Intelligence, dashboards or data reporting
  • Digital Asset Management or customer support platforms
  • ITIL and agile delivery methodologies
  • Technical procurement experience
  • Experience managing or mentoring a small technical team
  • Experience implementing or supporting AI agents and other AI-enabled tools
  • A relevant qualification in software engineering, web development, computer science or information technology
The Ideal Candidate

You will be a technically strong and commercially practical web professional who is comfortable remaining hands-on while also coordinating projects, suppliers and stakeholders. You should be able to identify technical risks, improve development and deployment processes, troubleshoot production issues and take ownership of platforms that are relied upon by a large number of users. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced web developer or technical lead who wants broader ownership of a major digital platform and the opportunity to progress into engineering management.
