Job summary

Gaelvert Development in Ireland is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own backend challenges, build real-time data APIs, and mentor a growing team. You'll work with Java 21, Spring Boot, and modern microservices, delivering reliable, scalable systems on time.

You’ll collaborate with architects, product managers, and peers, participate in code reviews, on-call rotations, and hiring processes. The role blends hands-on coding with technical leadership in a dynamic Dublin office with hybrid work.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years backend software engineering delivering complex solutions.
• Proven experience designing high-throughput, low-latency APIs.
• Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka or similar).
• Production systems with uptime/latency SLAs; real-time data a plus.
• Strong Java 21 skills; Spring 7+/Boot 4+/Security.
• REST, WebSocket, and async APIs; Spring WebFlux; reactive programming.
• Maven; CI/CD tools such as Bamboo or ArgoCD; Docker; Kubernetes.
• Git (Bitbucket/GitLab) and Jira for issue tracking.
• PostgreSQL: schema design, indexing; Liquibase a plus.
• Redis or similar caching systems.
• JUnit, TDD/BDD, Testcontainers, WireMock, SonarQube.
• Kafka/RabbitMQ production messaging; delivery guarantees.
• Monitoring: Prometheus, Micrometer, Grafana.
• Front-end basics (React/Angular) with TypeScript for tooling.

What you'll do

As a Senior Software Engineer on our backend engineering squad, you'll independently own complex technical challenges and help us deliver the real-time data APIs our business depends on. Your role is hands-on: you'll build, code, review, and mentor, while contributing directly to technical decisions within your team. You're always looking for ways we can get better.

You'll work side by side with your Team Technical Lead, architects, product managers, and fellow engineers to build reliable, scalable solutions delivered on time and to a high standard.

Your responsabilities will include:

• Investigating and resolving complex technical issues, improving system reliability and performance. Contributing to the implementation and optimisation of scalable, reliable systems, working within the architectural direction set by our enterprise architects.

• Championing high standards for code quality, participating in code reviews and technical discussions, and supporting peers through mentoring and knowledge sharing. Always looking for ways to improve how we work.

• Taking part in on-call rotations, respond to production incidents, and help us learn and improve from every incident.

• Mentoring engineers at earlier stages of their career, offering day-to-day technical guidance, and helping with code reviews and decision-making.

• Taking part in hiring activities and technical interviews to help the team grow.

What you'll bring

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

• 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, with proven experience delivering complex software solutions.

• Proven experience designing and operating high-throughput, low-latency APIs at scale.

• Experience with event-driven / pub-sub architectures (e.g., Kafka, or equivalent).

• Experience with production systems under strict uptime and latency SLAs; real-time data or other latency-sensitive domains are a strong plus.

• Strong proficiency in Java 21 and its features, with hands-on experience building production microservices using Spring 7+ / Spring Boot 4+, Spring Security, and the broader Spring ecosystem.

• Experience with real-time WebSocket communication, RESTful and async APIs, Swagger-documented, for both internal and external consumers. Spring WebFlux and reactive programming with Project Reactor or Netty is a plus.

• Hands-on experience with Maven, CI/CD tooling such as Bamboo or ArgoCD, Docker, and Kubernetes.

• Git-based version control (Bitbucket and/or GitLab), and issue tracking in Jira.

• Strong database engineering skills: PostgreSQL including schema design, indexing, and query optimisation. Experience with Liquibase for schema migrations is a plus.

• Experience with NoSQL and in-memory systems such as Redis for caching and data structures.

• Strong automated-testing discipline: JUnit, TDD/BDD, Testcontainers, WireMock, and SonarQube for code quality.

• Production experience with event-driven messaging using Kafka or RabbitMQ, including producer/consumer design and delivery guarantees.

• Experience with monitoring and observability tools: Prometheus, Micrometer, Grafana, or equivalent.

• Familiarity with modern front-end frameworks (React or Angular) and TypeScript, for occasional back-office tooling work.

• Hands-on experience with Playwright for end-to-end test automation.

Nice to Have

• Background in iGaming, sports betting, or real-time sports data is a plus.

• Kubernetes/container platform certifications are a plus.

• Experience with regulatory or compliance considerations in regulated industries (e.g., data licensing or gambling) is a bonus.

• Experience with Selenium or Cypress is a plus.
