Job summary

Bentley Systems in Dublin (hybrid) is seeking a Senior Principal Engineer to own the end-to-end technical architecture of the Bentley Developer Platform, including API gateway, authentication, metering, and billing. This role combines hands-on coding with strategic leadership.

You will set standards with Product teams, write production code, review PRs, and act as the senior technical authority across API families, driving cloud-native, scalable solutions that power MCP and developer experiences.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of software engineering experience and architecting large-scale systems.
• Own comprehensive developer platform architecture spanning from the front-end UX to API registry including commercialization, adoption, support and analytics.
• Experience with enterprise API Management platforms and developer portal frameworks (e.g., Backstage).
• Proven track record building a new API platform by integrating tools and writing custom software.
• Partner with Product teams to define global API standards for monitoring, authentication, metering and registration.
• Strong expertise in OAuth 2.0 / OIDC and security models.
• Experience in distributed systems, API gateways, and ERP/settlement integrations.
• Balance hands-on coding with cross-team communication and credibility across product engineering teams.
• Familiarity with AI/agent integration patterns and MCP is a strong plus.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the architecture of the developer platform, including the API gateway, authentication, metering, billing integration, and settlement, cloud-native from the outset.
• Own the end-to-end platform architecture from developer experience to registry, including commercialization, adoption, support, monitoring, and analytics.
• Work with Product to set API standards enabling monitoring, authentication, metering, and registration.
• Write production code and review PRs; remain the senior hands-on contributor and unblock engineers on the critical path.
• Serve as the primary technical interface between Developer Platform, Product & Technology and product engineering teams.
• Jointly develop and publish API Design Standards v1 with product teams so standards reflect reality.
