AMFConsulting is recruiting a Senior Java Software Engineer for a growing R&D team in Galway. The role has a strong backend Java focus, combining hands-on development with input into system design, code quality and mentoring.

You’ll work alongside colleagues across data engineering, firmware, DevOps, UX and cybersecurity to build the next generation of cloud-based software and connected digital solutions.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on Java development experience.
• Proficiency with Spring Boot, Spring Security and Spring Data.
• Experience designing and documenting RESTful APIs and stateless microservices.
• Strong SQL and relational database design and optimization.
• Experience with automated testing frameworks (JUnit, Mockito, Testcontainers).
• Knowledge of Git, Maven/Gradle, CI/CD pipelines and Docker concepts.
• Comfort in Linux/UNIX and Windows environments.
• Excellent communication and ability to work in an Agile team.

Responsibilities

The role

• Design and develop scalable backend services and RESTful APIs using modern Java and Spring Boot.
• Contribute to architectural decisions for secure, high-performance microservices.
• Build reliable applications supported by automated unit, integration and performance testing.
• Work closely with DevOps on CI/CD pipelines, containerised environments and cloud deployments.
• Troubleshoot issues across distributed systems and asynchronous workflows.
• Support junior and mid-level engineers through mentoring, code reviews and knowledge sharing.
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to bring features from concept through to production.

What you’ll bring

• 5+ years’ hands-on Java development experience, including modern Java versions such as Java 17/21+.
• Strong experience with Spring Boot, Spring Security and Spring Data.
• Experience designing, implementing and documenting RESTful APIs and stateless microservices.
• Strong relational database and SQL skills, including database design, indexing and query optimisation.
• Experience with automated testing frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito and Testcontainers, alongside test-driven development practices.
• Proficiency with Git, Maven or Gradle, CI/CD pipelines and Docker concepts.
• Confidence working across Linux/UNIX and Windows environments.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to work independently within a collaborative Agile team.

Useful additional experience

• AWS or Azure cloud platforms.
• Messaging and streaming technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ or MQTT.
• IoT or telematics data pipelines.
• Multi-tenant SaaS applications and role-based access control.
• Monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry or Datadog.
• Bash or Shell scripting.
• Familiarity with React, TypeScript or other modern front-end technologies.
