Job summary

Tata Consultancy Services UK&I is seeking an experienced senior software engineer to drive AI, machine learning and Generative AI initiatives for a leading UK higher education client. You will write Python services, build ML models, and implement prompt workflows in a cloud-first environment.

You will own technical quality, perform peer reviews and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver robust AI solutions while adhering to development standards and Agile practices.

Qualifications

• 6-9 years of software engineering experience with strong hands-on Python development.
• Practical experience developing Machine Learning and Generative AI solutions.
• Experience with Scikit-learn, TensorFlow or PyTorch and LLM-based application development.
• REST API development, data processing libraries, Git, CI/CD, unit testing and performance optimisation.

Responsibilities

• Develop AI, Machine Learning and Generative AI components from approved requirements and technical specifications.
• Build, train, evaluate and optimise Machine Learning models using approved datasets and development standards.
• Develop Python services, APIs, automation components and reusable modules, including prompt and retrieval workflows.
• Perform data preparation, feature engineering, model validation, unit testing, debugging and defect resolution.
• Support deployment, monitoring and production issue resolution; maintain technical documentation and guide junior developers through peer reviews.

The Role

Play a key hands-on role in developing, enhancing and supporting AI, Machine Learning and Generative AI solutions for a leading UK higher education organisation. You will use Python and modern cloud-based AI technologies to deliver reliable components within approved requirements and technical specifications.

• Build modern AI, Machine Learning and Generative AI capabilities that support meaningful digital transformation in higher education.
• Work hands-on with Python, LLM-based applications, cloud AI services and modern engineering practices.
• Influence delivery quality through technical ownership, peer review and guidance to junior developers.

Your responsibilities:

Your Profile:

• 6-9 years of relevant software engineering experience with strong hands-on Python development.
• Practical experience developing Machine Learning and Generative AI solutions.
• Experience with Scikit-learn, TensorFlow or PyTorch and LLM-based application development.
• REST API development, data processing libraries, Git, CI/CD, unit testing and performance optimisation.
• Strong analytical, communication and Agile delivery skills with the ability to work independently within defined standards.

Desirable skills/knowledge/experience:

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure AI services and experience with retrieval-augmented generation, prompt engineering and production monitoring.
