Job summary

Red Hat is offering a Sustaining Engineering Intern role in Waterford, Ireland. This paid, full‑time internship runs January to August 2027, with hybrid working hours and a focus on RHEL Userspace backporting, testing and release processes.

You will backport security fixes, configure tests, and collaborate with global teams to deliver high‑quality enterprise software. Applicants must be enrolled in an Irish university and ready to work full time from January 2027.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in an accredited Irish university for the full duration of the internship.
• Available to join full time January–August 2027.
• Strong written and spoken English.
• Interest in open source software and development.
• Basic knowledge of Linux and programming languages such as C, C++, Python, Go.

Responsibilities

• Work on RHEL Userspace security fixes and bugs and manage updates in stable streams.
• Backport selected fixes into stable releases and track upstream patches.
• Configure and backport tests, set up test environments and run verifications.
• Contribute to test framework development and test environment integration.
• Troubleshoot issues with the engineering team and help resolve them.
• Collaborate across product, quality, PM and release teams for timely updates.
• Participate in internal projects for automation and efficiency.
