Job summary

Cunningham Contracts is launching a one-year placement for a Quantity Surveying student (Sept 2027 intake). Based at our Newry head office, you will spend 3–4 days per week on site, gaining hands-on experience across Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare with exposure to international projects.

Reporting to the Commercial Manager, you will assist with contract quantities, procurement, cost reporting and earn value analysis while developing toward chartership through training and career pathways.

Qualifications

Must be studying a degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying.
Demonstrates sound commercial awareness.
Ability to report monthly and understand earned value analysis.

Responsibilities

Assist Quantity Surveyor with contract quantities and procurement.
Assist with contract variations and measurement with Senior QS.
Support payments, notices and cost reporting for projects.
Develop understanding of Commercial department processes and contribute to improvements.

PLACEMENT YEAR QUANTITY SURVEYOR

REPORTING TO: Commercial Manager

LOCATION: This role is based at our Head Office in Newry; however, you must be willing to spend a minimum of 3-4 days per week on site, gaining hands‑on experience on exciting projectsacross Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare, with potential exposure to international projects in Germany, Sweden and other EU countries.

Flexibility to travel is essential, but we'll provide the necessary accommodation and support to help you make the most of these opportunities.

CONTRACT TYPE: One Year Placement

Role Responsibilities

Assist Quantity Surveyor with contract quantity surveying duties.
Assist with the procurement of subcontractors.
Assist with contract variations and help measure with Senior Quantity Surveyors.
Help with payments and distribute notices to suppliers and subcontractors.
Assist with project cost control and cost reporting.
Develop a good understanding of the processes and procedures of the Commercial department and actively seek to assist in development and improvement where possible.

The Candidate

Qualifications & Experience

Candidates should be studying a degree level qualification (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying.
Sound Commercial Awareness

Skills & Attributes

Ability to demonstrate a good knowledge of monthly reporting and earned value analysis.
Excellent team player whilst also holding the ability to work independently on own initiative.
Excellent time management skills, with ability to work to tight deadlines.

Additional information

All candidates should have the legal right or a valid permit to that enables them to work in the Republic of Ireland and the UK.
Travel to various sites and live projects across Ireland will be expected as part of normal duties for this role, therefore a full driving licence and access to own vehicle will be an advantage.
As part of this role, you will be expected to work outdoors on live construction sites all year-round in varying weather conditions.
