Job summary

Qualifications

About the Role

We are seeking an Overhead Line Network Designer to join a growing design team supporting electricity infrastructure projects throughout the UK and Ireland.

This position would suit individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including overhead line construction, utility design, land surveying, civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, project management, or related infrastructure sectors.

The role combines office-based design work with regular site visits, offering a diverse workload and the opportunity to work closely with landowners, stakeholders, project teams, and utility clients.

You will be involved throughout the project lifecycle, from initial route assessments and stakeholder engagement through to construction support and quality assurance.

Responsibilities

• Conduct site visits, surveys, route assessments, and project feasibility studies.
• Engage with landowners, stakeholders, and members of the public to secure access and support project delivery.
• Carry out GPS surveying and setting out activities.
• Produce feasibility, progress, and technical reports.
• Prepare and maintain project-related Health & Safety documentation.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant utility standards and industry regulations.
• Support construction teams by conducting quality assurance inspections and checks on completed works.
• Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of quality, environmental, and health & safety management systems.
• Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams to deliver projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Requirements

• Experience within the overhead line, utility, power, or infrastructure sector.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with landowners and the public.
• Knowledge of overhead line design and construction practices.
• Familiarity with electricity distribution network design and construction standards.
• Strong IT skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities effectively.
• Collaborative approach with the ability to work within multidisciplinary teams.
• Professional and customer-focused attitude.
• Full driving licence and willingness to travel regularly throughout the UK and Ireland, including occasional overnight stays.
• Degree, HND/HNC, or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Land Surveying, Project Management, or a related discipline.
• Experience working on utility network or electricity distribution projects.
• Knowledge of industry standards and utility network requirements.
• Experience using AutoCAD and GIS-based design tools.
• Previous site surveying or route planning experience.
• Understanding of quality, environmental, and health & safety management systems.
• Background in overhead line construction, maintenance, or asset management.
