Job summary

TLI Group is seeking an Overhead Line Network Designer to join our expanding design team on infrastructure projects in Ireland and the U.K. The role focuses on design for utilities and private developers with extensive travel across Ireland. You will contribute across concept through energisation, ensuring safe, compliant OHL solutions.

The candidate will bring a degree in engineering and hands-on experience in OHL projects, with strong communication skills and a proactive, safety-first mindset.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical, Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience in overhead line engineering within a utility, contractor, or consultancy setting.
  • Strong understanding of OHL standards, design tools and engineering calculations.
  • Knowledge of Ireland’s grid infrastructure and renewable energy connection processes.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to work cross‑functionally within multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review overhead line designs supporting renewable generation connection projects.
  • Perform structural assessments, conductor selection, route analysis, tower/pole loading calculations, and sag‑tension studies.
  • Support grid connection studies for new renewable energy developments.
  • Identify constraints and optimise OHL routes to facilitate efficient connection of renewable assets.
  • Assist with grid reinforcement projects that increase hosting capacity for renewables.
  • Prepare technical drawings, specifications, and construction packages following utility and renewable integration standards.
  • Contribute to OHL elements within renewable project lifecycle—from concept and feasibility through design, construction, and energisation.
  • Carry out site surveys and walkdowns for route planning, constructability reviews, and environmental impact considerations.
  • Support construction teams with technical guidance and ensure project execution aligns with approved designs.
  • Participate in commissioning activities involving renewable substation connections.
  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with Irish safety legislation, utility standards, and renewable industry regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to design safety risk assessments, method statements, and environmental compliance documentation.
  • Actively promote safety-first culture in both office and site environments.

Job description

We are currently recruiting for an Overhead Line Network Designer for our expanding team working on infrastructure projects in both Ireland and the U.K.

This is a permanent position within the TLI Group Design Department focusing on both design projects for public utilities as well as private developers.

The successful candidate could emerge from one of several different types of background e.g. Grid Construction (overhead or underground), Land Surveying, Project Management, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with a number of years experience in their particular discipline.
