Job summary

Arcadis is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for an assignment in East Cork. This is a 12-month contract with potential extension, offering a hybrid arrangement (one day working from home, four days on site) with PAYE or LTD options.

The role focuses on design, modification and lifecycle management of mechanical assets, especially rotating equipment and fixed plant assets, supporting Capital Projects, Maintenance, Operations and Technical Services.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering with oil & gas, energy, pharma, chemical processing, or heavy industrial design experience.
• Experience specifying, designing and maintaining rotating equipment and fixed assets.
• Knowledge of asset integrity, reliability engineering, and lifecycle management; familiarity with ASME/API/ISO/EN standards desirable.

Responsibilities

• Develop mechanical equipment datasheets and technical specifications for rotating and fixed plant assets.
• Generate scopes of work for mechanical contractors and vendors for tendering and procurement with value engineering where appropriate.
• Define mechanical design requirements for capital projects and collaborate on equipment selection, cost estimates, constructability reviews and safety checks.
• Support project management with mechanical input including planning, budgeting, scheduling and reporting.
• Provide technical support to procurement for new equipment, upgrades, and spare parts related to mechanical systems.
• Produce and review P&IDs, equipment layouts, GA drawings, piping isometrics and installation drawings using AutoCAD or equivalent.
• Assist with asset lifecycle management for pumps, compressors, agitators, heat exchangers, tanks and related systems.
• Coordinate mechanical contractors during construction, commissioning and start-up; manage multiple projects with safety and quality in mind.

This role will be focused on the design, modification, and lifecycle management of mechanical assets, with particular emphasis on rotating equipment and fixed plant assets. The Mechanical Design Engineer will support Capital Projects, Maintenance, Operations, Technical Services, and HSE functions, providing technical design expertise with a strong focus on safety, reliability, cost control, and compliance with engineering standards and industry regulations.

The Role

• Develop mechanical equipment datasheets and technical specifications for rotating and fixed plant assets.
• Generate detailed scopes of work for mechanical contractors and equipment vendors, supporting tendering and procurement activities while applying value engineering principles where appropriate.
• Define mechanical design requirements for capital projects and collaborate with internal stakeholders, vendors, and contractors on equipment selection, cost estimates, constructability assessments, and safety reviews.
• Support Project Management teams with mechanical engineering input, including project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and reporting.
• Provide technical support to procurement for new equipment, upgrades, replacements, and spare parts relating to mechanical systems.
• Produce and review mechanical design documentation including P&IDs, equipment layouts, GA drawings, piping isometrics, and mechanical installation drawings using AutoCAD or equivalent software.
• Support asset lifecycle management activities for pumps, compressors, agitators, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, storage tanks, and associated mechanical systems.
• Assist with the coordination of mechanical contractors during construction, installation, commissioning, and start-up phases.
• Manage multiple projects of varying complexity while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and engineering standards.

Requirements

• Degree-qualified Mechanical Engineer with design experience within oil & gas, energy, pharmaceutical, chemical processing, or a similar heavy industrial environment.
• Proven experience in the specification, design, and maintenance of rotating equipment and fixed plant assets.
• Experience developing mechanical equipment datasheets, technical specifications, and engineering design documentation.
• Strong knowledge of asset integrity, reliability engineering, and lifecycle management principles.
• Experience with pressure equipment, piping systems, pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, storage tanks, or similar process equipment.
• Knowledge of relevant engineering standards and codes (ASME, API, ISO, EN standards) is highly desirable.
• Excellent stakeholder management skills with experience working alongside Operations, Maintenance, Projects, and external contractors.
