Job summary

Johnson & Johnson MedTech in Cork, Ireland, seeks an Automation Manager to lead the Automation and Manufacturing Systems team at a large orthopaedic site. You will report to the MAM Lead – Site Engineering and drive reliability, lifecycle, compliance, and digital capability development for manufacturing automation.

This role blends hands-on leadership with delivering new equipment, data platforms, and validated systems in a regulated manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Automation, Information Technology, Science, or a related discipline.
Eight+ years in GMP-regulated manufacturing with increasing leadership responsibility.
Three+ years of people-management experience.
Experience supporting and troubleshooting manufacturing automation and control systems in a live production environment.
Experience delivering automated equipment through design, integration, commissioning, validation, and ramp-up.
Knowledge of PLC/HMI, robotics, industrial networks, and manufacturing data platforms.
Familiarity with ISA-88/ISA-95, GAMP, and structured project delivery.

Responsibilities

Lead site automation support for production-critical equipment and systems, including escalation and out-of-hours support.
Diagnose and resolve faults across PLC/HMI, robotics, motion, vision systems, networks, historians, interfaces, and data platforms.
Lead automation activities for new equipment from concept through design review, FAT/SAT, commissioning, validation, and ramp-up.
Define automation architectures, controls standards, data requirements, cybersecurity, interfaces, diagnostics, and maintainability for new assets.
Own site roadmap and lifecycle plan for manufacturing systems (OSi PI, OT networks, data interfaces).
Develop and deliver a prioritized automation roadmap, investment plan, project portfolio, and resourcing strategy.
Support investigations, CAPAs, audits, and regulatory inspections with timely closure of actions.
Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing, inclusive team with clear objectives and budgets.
