Qualifications

  • Professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CPA or CIMA).
  • Experience with budgeting and forecasting.
  • Experience preparing management accounts and financial reports.
  • Experience working in a regulated financial services environment is desirable.
  • Detail oriented and well organized.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the general ledger, ensuring all financial transactions are recorded accurately and promptly.
  • Perform month-end and year-end closing procedures, including journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals.
  • Prepare and submit statutory and regulatory returns within required deadlines.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, investment accounts, loan portfolios, and member savings accounts.
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity, providing reports and forecasts to senior management.
  • Prepare management reports and financial presentations for the Board of Directors and management committees.

Job Purpose

Progressive Credit Union is seeking applications for the role of Financial Accountant on a permanent, part-time basis (24 hours per week). The role will be based in our Balbriggan office, and candidates should be open to travel throughout the branch network as required.

Reporting to the Treasury & Finance Manager, the Financial Accountant will play a key role in maintaining the financial integrity of the Credit Union through the preparation of accurate financial reports, effective financial controls, regulatory compliance and financial analysis. The successful candidate will support strategic decision-making by providing timely financial information, assisting with treasury and liquidity management, and contributing to the ongoing financial stability and success of the Credit Union.

Main Responsibilities
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the general ledger, ensuring all financial transactions are recorded accurately and promptly.
  • Perform month-end and year-end closing procedures, including journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals.
  • Prepare and submit statutory and regulatory returns within required deadlines.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, tax legislation, and internal policies.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, investment accounts, loan portfolios, and member savings accounts.
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity, providing reports and forecasts to senior management.
  • Assist in preparing annual budgets, financial forecasts, and variance analysis.
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing documentation and responding to audit queries.
  • Maintain and improve financial controls, policies, and accounting procedures.
  • Analyse financial performance and provide recommendations to improve operational efficiency and profitability.
  • Assist with asset and liability management reporting.
  • Support regulatory compliance with credit union legislation and prudential requirements.
  • Prepare management reports and financial presentations for the Board of Directors and management committees.
  • Work collaboratively with operational teams to ensure accurate financial reporting and process improvements.
  • Participate in finance-related projects, including system implementations and process enhancements.
  • Participate and contribute to team meetings and service reviews/ evaluations within your area of work and the credit union, fostering a spirit of collaboration.
  • Participate in and engage with the performance management and development programme.
  • Avail of any credit union training provided, to maintain relevant competencies and enable the fulfilment of the role, along with furthering the objectives of the credit union.
  • Experience preparing management accounts and financial reports.
  • Experience with budgeting and forecasting.
  • Knowledge of financial controls and reconciliations.
  • Experience working in a regulated financial services environment is desirable.
  • Detail oriented and well organized, able to work on own initiative.
  • A problem solver, with the ability to handle escalations effectively.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, inclusive of report writing.
  • Flexible and adaptable to learn and work on different tasks, in different situations.
  • Approachable and friendly, with good teamwork and collaboration.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite, with excellent Excel skills, along with good keyboard skills.
  • An understanding of the credit union movement would be a distinct advantage.
  • Full clean drivers license and access to a vehicle for inter-branch travel.
Qualifications
  • Professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CPA or CIMA).
