Job summary

Medserv seeks an Engineering Team Lead to guide a five-member engineering team and own end-to-end delivery. The role blends leadership with hands-on coding, around 30% time, while reporting to an Engineering Manager.

You will mentor engineers, align with Product, and ensure system quality and reliability. You will shape delivery processes, manage risks and dependencies, and drive improvements using metrics and AI-enabled workflows.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2+ years directly managing engineers and conducting performance/development conversations.
• Track record of delivering software with a team that shipped it.
• Strong PHP experience, ideally Laravel, with hands-on credibility.
• Experience running agile ceremonies (planning, grooming, retros) and improving team velocity.
• Solid relational database design and MySQL knowledge.
• Ability to identify and address delivery problems and underperformance.

About Medserv

Medserv is a market-leading provider of healthcare administration and billing services to providers across Ireland and the UK.

Our software supports the day-to-day operation of medical practices, including billing, claims, payments, appointments, and patient administration.

The Role

You will lead a team of five engineers and be accountable for what the team delivers, and how the people on it grow.

You will own the team's delivery cycle end to end, from planning and grooming through to shipping, while staying close enough to the code to make sound technical decisions and contribute directly where it counts.

This is a hands-on leadership role. Around 30% of your time will be spent in the codebase. The rest will be focused on leading the team.

You will report to an Engineering Manager.

What You'll Do

• Line manage a team of five engineers, covering 1:1s, goal setting, feedback, performance and career development.
• Own the team's delivery cycle, including sprint planning, grooming, estimation and predictable delivery against agreed priorities.
• Unblock the team, surface risks early, manage dependencies across teams and escape where needed.
• Manage relationships with external contractors, including setting expectations, overseeing their delivery and holding their work to the same standard as the team's.
• Stay hands-on, spending around 30% of your time writing code, reviewing important changes and making technical decisions with the team.
• Work closely with Product to turn business problems into well-scoped, deliverable work.
• Be accountable for the quality, reliability and ongoing support of the systems your team owns.
• Use delivery and engineering metrics to identify bottlenecks and improve how the team works.
• Lead the team's use of AI to improve developer experience and to streamline engineering and delivery processes.
• Interview, onboard and develop engineers, and raise the standard of how the team operates.
• Report clearly on progress, risks and delivery to engineering and product leadership.

Our Technology

Essential Experience

• At least 2 years directly managing engineers, including performance and development conversations.
• A track record of delivering software, with shipped work behind you and a team that shipped it.
• Strong commercial PHP experience, ideally within a Laravel environment, with the technical depth to stay hands-on and credible with your team.
• Experience running agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, grooming and retrospectives, and improving how a team works.
• Good knowledge of relational database design and MySQL.
• Comfortable making decisions, setting expectations and holding a team to a high standard.
• Able to identify delivery problems, address underperformance and improve how a team operates.

You do not need to have previously held the title of Engineering Team Lead. We care more about the level you have operated at, the teams you have run and the results you have delivered.

Additional Information

• This is a flexible hybrid role based in Dublin, Ireland.
• Applicants are expected to work from the Dublin office at least two days per week.
