Job summary

The Semiconductor Giant is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer to drive storage driver and software module development across the full storage stack on Cork, Ireland. You will work on Linux kernel components, storage drivers, and memory subsystems while optimizing performance and power usage.

You will also develop tools for image creation and flash provisioning, support various file systems, and contribute to Linux userspace testing.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of industry experience in embedded software engineering.
• Strong expertise in Linux kernel programming and device driver development.
• Solid kernel-level and user-space debugging skills using JTAG or ICE debuggers.
• Strong understanding of RTOS concepts and embedded programming.
• Excellent analytical and interpersonal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain storage drivers and modules across the storage stack (bootloaders, UEFI, Linux user space).
• Work on Linux kernel components including storage drivers, filesystem modules, and memory subsystems.
• Optimize storage and memory performance for runtime efficiency and power consumption.
• Develop PC tools for image creation (FAT, GPT) and flash provisioning (UFS) and storage flashing tools.
• Support filesystems such as FAT and LittleFS and proprietary modules; build Linux user-space tools for testing and validation.
• Debug kernel-level issues and collaborate with customers and flash vendors to resolve problems.
• Engage with cross-functional teams and upstream Linux kernel community to implement features.
• Assist expansion into automotive, home entertainment, and embedded computing markets.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a world-renowned Semiconductor Giant as a Senior Embedded Software Engineer within their Core Peripherals Storage team.

This team is responsible for delivering low-level storage drivers, filesystems, and specialized tools across advanced flash technologies including UFS, NVMe, SD Express, eMMC, NAND, and NOR.

About the Role

This position focuses on developing storage drivers and software modules across the entire storage stack, including bootloaders, UEFI, Windows HLOS, and Linux user space.

Key responsibilities include:

• Developing and maintaining storage drivers and proprietary filesystem modules for modem processors and Linux-based SoCs.
• Working on Linux kernel components, including storage drivers, filesystem modules, block drivers, and memory subsystems.
• Optimizing storage and memory performance for runtime efficiency and power consumption.
• Developing PC tools for image creation (e.g., FAT, GPT) and flash provisioning (e.g., UFS), alongside storage flashing tools for development and factory environments.
• Supporting filesystems such as FAT and LittleFS (Zephyr RTOS), as well as proprietary filesystems and modem image modules.
• Building and maintaining Linux user-space tools for storage testing and validation.
• Supporting commercialization by debugging and resolving kernel-level issues raised by customers and flash vendor partners.
• Engaging with cross-functional teams, open-source communities, and the upstream Linux kernel community to implement new storage features.
• Supporting expansion into diverse tech markets including automotive, home entertainment, and embedded computing.

Required Skills & Experience

• 4+ years of industry experience in embedded software engineering.
• Strong expertise in Linux kernel programming, device driver development, and kernel internals (memory management, scheduling, and driver frameworks).
• Solid kernel-level and user-space debugging skills using JTAG or ICE debuggers.
• Strong understanding of real-time operating systems (RTOS) and core embedded programming concepts.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency in Python.
• Experience with Linux filesystem modules such as F2FS, EXT4, or EROFS.
• Familiarity with ARM architecture and hardware-level debugging.
