Job summary

Sterling Engineering Ltd - Ireland & Europe in Galway seeks an experienced Design Coordinator to drive the coordinated design and construction programme on a major project. You will work with the Project Manager, Design Manager, QS and consultants to ensure buildable, compliant and commercially viable design information is produced.

The role requires coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing design programmes and leading design meetings, with a proactive, detail-focused approach to resolve

Qualifications

  • Experience as Design Coordinator or similar in construction.
  • Strong technical understanding of design and construction processes.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary consultants and subcontractors.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage production of design information across the project team.
  • Ensure designs comply with project specifications, Employer’s Requirements, legislation and regulations.
  • Drive consultants and subcontractors to deliver information in line with programme requirements.
  • Review and coordinate drawings, specifications and technical documentation for construction suitability.
  • Manage design programmes, Design Responsibility Matrices and change control.
  • Lead design team meetings and workshops with clear action tracking.

Job description

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Design Coordinator to join a major construction project in Galway and play a key role in the successful delivery of the design and construction programme.

The Design Coordinator will work closely with the Project Manager, Design Manager, Quantity Surveyor, consultants and subcontractors to ensure the successful delivery of coordinated, compliant, buildable and commercially viable design information.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage the production of design information across the project team.
  • Ensure designs comply with project specifications, Employer’s Requirements, legislation and regulations.
  • Manage and drive consultants and subcontractors to deliver information in line with programme requirements.
  • Review and coordinate drawings, specifications and technical documentation to ensure they are suitable for construction.
  • Manage design programmes, Design Responsibility Matrices, change control, design risk and opportunity schedules and other key design trackers.
  • Lead and coordinate design team meetings and workshops, ensuring actions are clearly allocated and closed out within agreed timescales.
  • Identify and resolve design issues quickly, considering buildability, programme, cost and Health & Safety.
  • Work closely with the wider project team to ensure design, procurement and construction programmes remain aligned.
  • Support the Design Manager with consultant and specialist contractor appointments.
  • Assist with BCAR, Building Control, planning conditions, warranties, BREEAM and project handover requirements.
  • Manage and support Document Controllers, ensuring effective document management and compliance with project procedures.
  • Drive design close-out, including outstanding design issues, technical submissions, as-built information and O&M documentation.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience as a Design Coordinator, Senior Design Coordinator, Design Manager or similar within construction.
  • Strong technical understanding of the design and construction process.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary consultants and subcontractors.
  • Good knowledge of construction drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
  • Understanding of BCAR, Building Control, planning and BIM/document control processes.
  • Strong commercial, contractual and programme awareness.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proactive, solutions-focused approach with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership and drive issues through to completion.
