Controls Engineer (Ireland) - €70-80K Basic - Exclusive role
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Controls Engineer to join our growing industrial automation team supporting clients across the life sciences, pharmaceutical, biotech, and advanced manufacturing sectors in Ireland.
You will take ownership of control systems in live production environments, delivering reliable automation solutions that keep critical processes running safely and efficiently. This is a hands-on role involving PLC programming, SCADA/HMI configuration, troubleshooting, commissioning, and continuous improvement within regulated (GMP) settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, program, and maintain PLC-based control systems (primarily Rockwell Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens platforms)
- Configure and support SCADA, HMI, and batch systems (e.g. FactoryTalk View, FTBatch, or equivalent)
- Provide day-to-day system ownership, troubleshooting, and technical support for automation systems in Formulation, Fill/Finish, Utilities, Packaging, or similar process areas
- Lead or support commissioning, testing, and handover of new or upgraded control systems
- Produce and maintain technical documentation including functional specifications, loop diagrams, architecture drawings, and GAMP-compliant lifecycle documents
- Manage change controls, deviations, and CAPAs related to automation systems
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (process, validation, facilities, project engineers) and external vendors
- Ensure all work complies with cGMP, data integrity, EHS, and site quality standards
- Contribute to continuous improvement and reliability initiatives on critical control systems
Required Experience & Skills
- Degree (or equivalent) in Automation, Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, Chemical, or related Engineering discipline
- 3–5+ years’ experience in industrial automation / controls engineering (pharmaceutical, biotech, or high-spec process manufacturing preferred)
- Strong hands-on experience with PLC programming and industrial control systems (Rockwell Studio 5000 / Logix or Siemens TIA Portal / Step 7)
- Experience with SCADA/HMI platforms and live-site support
- Working knowledge of GAMP lifecycle, GMP, change control, and data integrity requirements
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex automation issues under pressure
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Full clean Irish driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites as required
- Right to work in Ireland (EU passport or Stamp 4 preferred)
- Experience in a System Owner or similar accountability role
- Knowledge of DeltaV, AVEVA PI, Building Automation Systems (e.g. Siemens Desigo), or MES platforms
- Experience with batch recipe management, utilities automation, or fill/finish packaging lines
- Prior work in a contract engineering services environment supporting multinational clients
