Technical Architect – Intermediate | Contract | Dublin
We are currently seeking an experienced Technical Architect / Senior Developer to support a major technology programme in Dublin. This is an initial 3-month contract focused on the analysis and delivery of a large-scale migration from 32-bit to 64-bit COBOL, alongside associated applications and systems.
The successful candidate will work closely with development, architecture, testing and project teams, taking responsibility for technical delivery while also supporting and mentoring more junior team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the analysis and delivery of the migration from 32-bit to 64-bit COBOL and associated systems.
- Analyse requirements and provide development estimates.
- Design, develop and enhance applications in line with established technical standards.
- Produce functional and technical design specifications.
- Maintain high standards around code quality, data and unit testing.
- Identify and implement appropriate integration and automated testing.
- Participate in code and peer reviews.
- Support system testing, including investigation and resolution of defects/SIRs.
- Assist with test and production releases.
- Perform root-cause analysis of technical issues and support incident/bug resolution.
- Work closely with developers, technical teams, testers and support functions throughout the development lifecycle.
- Identify technical risks or blockers and escalation these appropriately to project/team leads.
- Contribute to project tracking, risk management and delivery activities.
- Maintain accurate project and development information within Jira and related tools.
- Provide coaching and technical support to junior resources and actively facilitate knowledge transfer.
Key Skills & Experience
We are looking for someone with strong experience in complex enterprise application environments who can demonstrate:
- Strong COBOL development experience, ideally involving legacy-system migration or modernisation.
- Experience working with technologies and architectures comparable to large-scale public-sector/enterprise environments.
- Strong understanding of the application development lifecycle.
- Experience across Waterfall, Agile and hybrid delivery methodologies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
- Experience working with relational databases, including SQL and/or Ingres.
- Exposure to NoSQL frameworks would be advantageous.
- Experience parsing and manipulating structured data including RDBMS, XML, JSON and text files.
- Experience producing technical/functional specifications and adhering to development and testing standards.
- Ability to work effectively with technical teams, application developers, testers, support teams, stakeholders and senior management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

This would suit an experienced COBOL Technical Architect, Senior COBOL Developer or Mainframe/Legacy Systems specialist who is comfortable remaining hands‑on while contributing to architecture, migration, testing and overall technical delivery.
