Job summary

E-Frontiers in Dublin is seeking an experienced COBOL Software Engineer on a 6-month contract, based at Dublin 2, Grand Canal Square. The role focuses on modernising critical systems within a major public-sector technology programme, with a strong emphasis on migrating COBOL from 32-bit to 64-bit.

You will contribute to development, testing, releases and continuous improvement across the application landscape, and mentor junior developers while collaborating with testers and stakeholders.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of commercial COBOL development experience.
• Experience in standards-driven environments and full lifecycle.
• Understanding of Agile, Waterfall and hybrid delivery methodologies.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
• Ability to own tasks, identify risks and resolve challenges with teams.

We are looking for an experienced Custom Software Engineer with strong COBOL expertise to join a major public-sector technology programme focused on the modernisation of critical systems.

You’ll play a key role in supporting the migration of applications from 32-bit to 64-bit COBOL, while contributing to development, testing, releases and continuous improvement across the wider application landscape.

Responsibilities

• Develop new functionality and enhancements in COBOL, following established coding and quality standards.
• Support the 32-to-64-bit COBOL migration, including analysis, integration testing and system-test support.
• Produce estimates, functional designs and/or user stories and participate in peer reviews.
• Support releases, defect resolution, root-cause analysis and live incident/bug management.
• Mentor junior developers, facilitate knowledge transfer and collaborate closely with testers, technical teams and project stakeholders.

About You

• 6+ years' commercial COBOL development experience with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working within standards-driven environments and across the full application development lifecycle.
• Understanding of Agile, Waterfall and hybrid delivery methodologies.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to work effectively across development, testing, support and management teams.
• Comfortable taking ownership, identifying technical risks and working collaboratively to resolve project challenges.
