Job summary

Blackrock Clinic in Dublin is seeking a Clinical Specialist Radiographer (Nuclear Medicine) to lead the Nuclear Medicine department. You will supervise radiographers, optimise patient workflows, and develop SOPs to ensure high-quality diagnostic imaging.

The role requires a BSc in Radiography, a Postgraduate Diploma in Nuclear Medicine, and CORU registration, with 6+ years in the field. On-site 35 hours/week, with opportunities for professional growth.

Role Purpose

• Lead, guide and supervise radiographers and other staff and to successfully manage the Nuclear Medicine Department, with effective utilisation of all resources allocated.
• Manage in a rapidly changing environment and be willing to undertake such additional duties within the Department, as may be assigned from time to time.

• Manage and lead the Nuclear Medicine department on a day-to-day basis and perform diagnostic examinations as required.
• Ensure patient workflows are optimal for the Nuclear Medicine Department in order to minimise patients waiting times and improve the patient’s experience.
• Develop and implement standard operating procedures for Nuclear Medicine to ensure that high-quality diagnostic images are delivered.
• Maintain a quality assurance program for all Nuclear Medicine equipment.
• Supervise and train less experienced and new staff members in Nuclear Medicine.
• Perform and lead clinical audits in order to identify areas for improvement.
• Responsibility for Quality Assurance within the Department
• Be familiar and comply with the Radiology Department Guidelines and Department Protocols.

• Support the Radiology Services Manager with new initiatives that are aimed at delivering the highest standards of patient care while adopting a cost consciences approach.

• Undertake, when necessary, administrative tasks to facilitate the smooth running of the department.
• Regularly update your knowledge of new developments and promote awareness of these amongst colleagues.
• Provides input into the creation of new protocols for routine procedures being implemented for the first time.
• Participate in the planning and scheduling of all tests, utilising a sound knowledge of the timing, constraints and processes involved for the diverse range of tests.
• Ensure that all preparations necessary for the conduct of each test are made and all necessary consumables and the correct pharmaceuticals are ordered.
• Receive the patient into the department and provide a full explanation of the procedures being proposed and answer any questions posed, taking the utmost care to respect the patient’s fears, wishes and privacy. Ensure that the patient is not taking any medication contra‑indicated for the test.
• Orders radiopharmaceuticals taking care that delivery times are specified to match patients scans times incorporating radioactive decay considerations.
• Prepares radioactive materials for administration including the calculation of the correct levels of administered activity taking into account corrections for radioactive decay and physiological condition (e.g. pregnancy, pulmonary hypertension, weight and age).
• Administer radioactive pharmaceuticals to patients (orally / intradermal /intravenous injection).
• Undertake aftercare of patients following administration of radioactive materials and maintain awareness of possible adverse reactions. Provide reassurance and information and explain follow-up procedures to patients where necessary.

• Communicate appropriately with colleagues and other members of the health care teams.
• Communicate in a manner that avoids antagonism, reduces conflict and prevents undue anxiety.
• Recognise limitations and seek assistance where necessary.
• Attend and contribute to appropriate meetings.
• Accept constructive advice when appropriate.
• Report all incidents immediately, which may adversely affect a patient, colleague or the Blackrock Clinic.
• Communicating clearly and appropriately with patients, their relatives / friends colleagues and all other members of the multidisciplinary team including responding to queries, answering the phone, taking messages and passing on written and verbal information to patients.
• Adhere to Human Resource policies as set out in The Blackrock Clinic Employee Manual.
• Cooperate and take part in the Blackrock Clinic Mission Statement in dealing with patients and clinic staff members.
• Comply with policies and procedures at Blackrock Clinic as regards Health & Safety, Accident and Incident Reporting, Complaints Procedure, Fire Policy and Evacuation.
• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all patients and activities of Blackrock Clinic.
• Present a professional appearance and conform to the dress, hygiene and infection control policies of the clinic.
