UCD School of Earth Sciences seeks to recruit a senior IT systems administrator to support the day-to-day IT requirements of the School’s students, staff and research teams, to facilitate access to hardware and software, and to maintain and oversee the development and security of the School’s strategic IT infrastructure in collaboration with UCD IT services. The school runs its own secure network, HPC and general and storage server architecture and benefits from access to a wide range of licenced third-party software for 3D subsurface interpretation and modelling software, open-source and in-house software, and generic packages made available via UCD IT services.
The IT administrator will provide expert and timely support for: (1) mainly (but not exclusively) Windows-based, office, classroom, field, and work stations, associated software; (2) specialist geoscience (geophysical, geospatial, geomodelling) and 3D interpretation software and associated hardware; (3) management of the School’s network, licenses, firewall and dedicated servers; (4) storage and off-site back-up facilities, and (5) classroom audio-visual and video-capture equipment.
The candidate would benefit from previous experience working in an academic environment or large organization, and have experience of networks, server architecture, firewalls, cybersecurity, computer maintenance and procurement processes. The school has research groups involved in data-heavy and/or computationally demanding geophysical and remote sensing analysis and numerical geological and process modelling, and a science or engineering background would be advantageous for familiarity of applications. The position will also support the delivery of the School’s teaching programmes (currently two MSc programmes and a BSc in Earth Sciences) and will involve training of students in system management and security. The IT administrator will also have an important liaison role with UCD IT Services, groups within the College of Science associated with School of Earth Science researchers, and with industry and academic research partners. We seek a proactive and self-motivated IT specialist
who understands the academic environment and can help drive the School’s IT systems during the fast-paced ongoing digital transformation.
