Job summary

Ajaib Group is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer in Shared Services to establish technical direction for backend systems across Growth, Onboarding and Shared Experience. You will solve cross-team challenges and stay hands-on where it matters most.

You will mentor engineers, design scalable services and collaborate with product, ops and architecture in a fintech environment that values reliability and performance. Hybrid work arrangement offered.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of designing and operating large-scale distributed systems.
• Proven ability to lead technical work across teams and raise engineering excellence.
• Strong proficiency in Java and Go.
• Experience with Kafka and Redis; relational and NoSQL databases.

Responsibilities

• Define the technical direction and architecture for backend systems spanning multiple teams within the investor journey.
• Lead the design of scalable, fault-tolerant and secure services and review critical designs from other teams.
• Identify technical risks, trade-offs and drive decisions aligned with business goals.
• Lead investigations and root cause analysis for production incidents and drive improvements.
• Set engineering standards for reliability, observability, security and performance.
• Mentor Senior Engineers and grow technical leadership across the team.

Role Overview

As a Staff Backend Engineer in Shared Services, you establish technical standards and raise the excellence bar for the engineering team. You work with the engineering head to set technical direction for backend systems across Growth, Onboarding and Shared Experience. You solve the hardest problems that cut across teams, such as KYC reliability, partner integrations and the services behind portfolio and homepage, and you make the engineers around you stronger. You stay hands-on where it matters most.

• Define the technical direction and architecture for backend systems that span several teams in the investor journey.
• Lead the design of scalable, fault-tolerant and secure services, and review critical designs from other teams.
• Identify technical risks early, weigh trade-offs and drive decisions that fit business goals.
• Lead investigations and root cause analysis for complex production incidents, and drive lasting improvements.
• Set and promote engineering standards for reliability, observability, security and performance.
• Partner with Engineering Managers, Product, Ops and Architecture to deliver cross-team initiatives.
• Mentor Senior Engineers and help grow technical leadership across the team.
• Stay hands-on with implementation for critical components and complex problems.
• Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience: 8+ years of professional software engineering, with a proven record of designing and running large-scale distributed systems and leading technical work across teams.
• Languages: Highly proficient in Java and Go.
• System Design & Architecture: Strong expertise in microservices, event-driven architectures, reliability engineering, observability and performance optimization.
• Data & Messaging: Deep practical experience with Kafka, Redis, and relational and NoSQL databases, including query tuning.
• Infrastructure: Experience designing and operating applications on cloud platforms (GCP, AWS).
• Mindset & Domain: Background in fintech or another high-scale, regulated environment. Strong communication, with the ability to influence technical decisions without direct authority.
