Job summary

Grab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Business Platform team in Jakarta, Indonesia. You will design, build, and evolve backend platform services that manage business profiles, store metadata, business configuration, and related workflows, influencing how businesses set up operations on the platform.

The ideal candidate demonstrates ownership, system-design thinking, and a commitment to building scalable, reliable platforms.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in backend/platform engineering with high‑scale production systems.
• Proficiency in Go, Java, or Kotlin.
• Deep knowledge of distributed systems, service‑oriented architecture, microservices, APIs, data modeling, and eventual consistency.
• Cloud (AWS/GCP/Azure), containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines, caching and observability.
• Data & Messaging: SQL/NoSQL databases, event-driven architectures, messaging systems (Kafka/RabbitMQ).
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills; Git proficiency; SaaS or e-commerce domain experience; mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities

• Lead the architectural design of microservices, high-throughput APIs, and data storage solutions for scale and availability.
• Diagnose performance bottlenecks, refactor infrastructure, ensure low latency across distributed systems.
• Own end-to-end delivery from design docs to production features.
• Drive code quality through rigorous reviews and reliability standards; mentor engineers.
• Oversee cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, security protocols, and incident management.

We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Business Platform team in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Business Platform powers the backend capabilities that enable businesses and enterprises to onboard, operate, grow, and serve consumers at scale across Southeast Asia.

Get to Know the Role

In this role, you will design, build, and evolve backend platform services that manage business profiles, store metadata, business configuration, and related operational workflows. You'll work on systems that sit close to the source of truth for business data and workflows—systems that directly influence how businesses set up their operations, how internal teams operate reliably, and how downstream products consume trusted business information. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong ownership, system design thinking, and a commitment to building platforms that simplify complexity rather than spread it around. This is an onsite role based in Jakarta.

The Critical Tasks You Will Perform

• Lead the architectural design of microservices, high-throughput APIs, and data storage solutions built to handle scale and high availability.
• Diagnose high-stakes performance bottlenecks, refactor core infrastructure, and ensure low latency across distributed systems.
• Own end-to-end delivery of mission-critical systems—from writing technical design documents (TDDs) and scoping projects to deploying and maintaining production features.
• Drive code quality across the team through high‑bar code reviews, system reliability standards, and technical mentorship of mid/junior engineers.
• Oversee cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure), automated CI/CD pipelines, security protocols, and robust incident management/observability to guarantee strict SLAs.

Qualifications

What Essential Skills You Will Need

• 5+ years in backend/platform engineering with high‑scale production systems.
• Strong proficiency in Go, Java, or Kotlin.
• Deep knowledge of distributed systems, service‑oriented architecture, microservices, APIs, data modeling, and eventual consistency.
• Tech Stack: Cloud (AWS/GCP/Azure), containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines, caching, and observability.
• Data & Messaging: SQL/NoSQL databases, event‑driven architectures, and messaging systems (Kafka/RabbitMQ).
• Core Competencies: Strong problem‑solving and communication skills; version control (Git) proficiency. SaaS or e‑commerce domain experience, mentoring junior engineers.
