Job summary

McDermott International is seeking a senior Coating QC Lead to provide expert interpretation of coating specifications, industry codes, and client requirements. You will lead coating QC inspectors, ensure adherence to project yard standards, and drive a proactive quality culture across multiple offshore and fabrication projects.

The role requires 15+ years of coating quality experience, strong leadership, and proficiency with ISO 12944 and NACE/AMPP standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 15 years of coating/painting quality experience in fabrication/construction/offshore.
  • Expert knowledge of ISO 12944, SSPC/NACE/AMPP, ASTM, ISO 8501‑8503.
  • Certification such as NACE/AMPP Coating Inspector Level 2 or 3 preferred.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality oversight and report coating issues, risks, and NCRs to PMT and Yard Quality Manager across all active projects.
  • Prepare and review Coating Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), Method Statements, and Work Instructions for coating works.
  • Lead Coating QC Inspectors, ensuring daily coordination and consistent inspection practices.
  • Interpret coating standards and project specs; manage technical queries and deviations.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Production, Engineering, Clients, and subcontractors to ensure compliance.
  • Promote high safety and quality standards and Code of Business Conduct in coating operations.
  • Initiate proactive quality planning, mock-ups, qualification tests, and preventative actions.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions for coating NCRs.

Job Description

Job Overview:

The Coating QC Lead provides expert-level interpretation of coating specifications, industry codes, and client requirements. The role involves solving complex coating‑related issues, supporting multiple projects simultaneously, and working independently with minimal supervision. The Coating QC Lead leads and coordinates Coating QC Inspectors ensures compliance with project and yard standards, and fosters a proactive quality culture in the coating discipline.

Responsibilities

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Quality Oversight & Reporting
    • Report all coating-related quality issues, risks, and non‑conformances to PMT and the Yard Quality Manager across all active projects
    • Ensure the implementation and continual improvement of coating‑related elements within Project Quality Plans and yard quality procedures
    • Prepare and review Coating Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), Method Statements, and Work Instructions applicable to coating works
  • Leadership & Team Management
    • Lead and supervise Coating QC Inspectors working across the yard, ensuring daily coordination, workload allocation, and consistent inspection practice
    • Ensure all inspectors and production personnel understand coating specifications, acceptance criteria, and project requirements
  • Technical Expertise & Code Interpretation
    • Provide authoritative interpretation of coating standards, project specifications, manufacturer data sheets (MDS), and client requirements
    • Manage technical queries, deviations, clarifications, and waivers through the Site Query System with proper documentation and communication
  • Coordination & Interface
    • Coordinate with Operations, Production, Engineering, Certifying Authorities, Clients, and subcontractors to ensure coating activities comply with specifications
    • Facilitate resolution of coating quality issues through proactive engagement with production and management teams
  • Safety, Quality & Compliance
    • Promote high standards of safety, quality, productivity, and Code of Business Conduct compliance within all coating operations
    • Ensure all coating processes (surface preparation, environmental condition control, coating application, curing, DFT measurement, etc.) comply with applicable standards
  • Initiate proactive coating quality planning, including readiness checks, mock‑ups, qualification tests, and preventive measures to ensure first‑time‑right execution
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions for coating‑related NCRs
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Materials, Corrosion, or related discipline
  • Minimum 15 years of coating/painting quality experience in fabrication, construction, offshore, or related industries
  • Expert knowledge of international coating standards such as ISO 12944, SSPC/NACE/AMPP standards, ASTM, ISO 8501‑8503, and relevant project specifications
  • Certification(s) such as NACE/AMPP Coating Inspector Level 2 or 3 (or equivalent FROSIO Level 3) preferred
  • Strong communication, coordination, and leadership skills
  • Proficient with computers and Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)
