Job summary

McDermott International is seeking a Quality Coating / Painting Inspector to monitor coating activities and ensure compliance with project specs and ITPs. You will analyze inspection results, recommend corrective actions, and support continuous quality improvements on offshore and onshore assets.

The role requires experience in coating inspection, surface preparation, and process monitoring, plus proficiency with inspection tools and MS Office.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or relevant engineering/technical degree.
  • Minimum five (5+) years of coating/painting quality control or inspection experience with a degree, or eight (8+) years with a diploma.
  • Certification in coating inspection preferred: NACE/AMPP CIP Level 2, BGAS-CSWIP Grade 2 (Level 2), FROSIO Coating Inspector Level 2.
  • Knowledge of SSPC, NACE/AMPP, ISO 8501-1/2/3, ISO 12944, ASTM standards related to coating inspection.
  • Experience in fabrication yards, offshore construction, shipbuilding, oil & gas, marine, or industrial projects preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Determine coating and painting conformity to customer specifications through daily surveillance activities and ITP inspection points.
  • Verify surface preparation activities, including cleaning, blasting, profile measurement, and environmental conditions.
  • Inspect coating materials to ensure proper storage, shelf life, certification, mixing, and application requirements are met.
  • Monitor coating and painting application processes to ensure compliance with approved procedures, manufacturer recommendations, and project requirements.
  • Perform and document inspections including: surface cleanliness assessment, surface profile measurement, environmental condition monitoring, WFT/DFT measurements, and tests.
  • Identify coating non-conformities, raise inspection reports and NCRs, and ensure effective corrective actions are implemented.
  • Appraise coating quality to determine conformity and non-conformity according to drawings, specs, procedures, and ITP.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records, reports, test results, and quality documentation.
  • Coordinate interfaces with Operations, Production, Engineering, Certifying Authorities, Clients, Third-Party Inspectors, and Subcontractors.
  • Exercise a proactive approach to preventing coating quality issues with Production, Engineering, and Project Management.
  • Participate in client inspections, hold points, witness points, and final acceptance inspections.
  • Verify repairs and touch-up activities are completed in accordance with procedures and standards.
  • Support investigations of coating failures and quality concerns and assist in preventive actions.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality management systems.
  • Liaise with Customer Representatives to obtain inspection approvals and stage releases within the Project Quality Plan and ITP.

Job Description

Job Overview:

The Quality Coating / Painting Inspector applies conceptual and practical knowledge of coating inspection and quality control processes. Working with moderate guidance from colleagues and leadership, they are responsible for monitoring coating and painting activities, identifying quality issues, and ensuring compliance with approved procedures, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), project specifications, and customer requirements. The inspector analyzes inspection results, recommends corrective actions, and supports continuous improvement initiatives to achieve project quality objectives.

Responsibilities

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Determine coating and painting conformity to customer specifications through daily surveillance activities and ITP inspection points in accordance with the Project Quality Plan
  • Verify surface preparation activities, including cleaning, blasting, profile measurement, and environmental conditions, comply with approved procedures and project specifications
  • Inspect coating materials to ensure proper storage, shelf life, certification, mixing, and application requirements are met
  • Monitor coating and painting application processes to ensure compliance with approved procedures, manufacturer recommendations, and project requirements
  • Perform and document inspections including:
    • Surface cleanliness assessment
    • Surface profile measurement
    • Environmental condition monitoring (temperature, humidity, dew point)
    • Wet Film Thickness (WFT) measurements
    • Dry Film Thickness (DFT) measurements
    • Holiday detection and adhesion testing, where applicable
  • Identify coating non-conformities, raise inspection reports and NCRs, and ensure effective corrective actions are implemented and verified
  • Appraise coating quality to determine conformity and non-conformity in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, coating procedures, and Inspection & Test Plans
  • Maintain accurate inspection records, reports, test results, and quality documentation required by project and client requirements
  • Coordinate interfaces with Operations, Production, Engineering, Certifying Authorities, Clients, Third-Party Inspectors, and Subcontractors to ensure compliance with quality requirements
  • Exercise a proactive approach to preventing coating quality issues by working closely with Production, Engineering, and Project Management personnel
  • Participate in client inspections, hold points, witness points, and final acceptance inspections
  • Verify repairs and touch-up activities are completed in accordance with approved procedures and accepted quality standards
  • Support investigations of coating failures, defects, and quality concerns and assist in implementing preventive and corrective actions
  • Ensure compliance with applicable health, safety, environmental, and quality management system requirements
  • Liaise with Customer Representatives to obtain inspection approvals and stage releases for coating and painting activities as identified within the Project Quality Plan and ITP
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • High school diploma or degree in a relevant engineering, materials, coatings, or technical discipline
  • Minimum five (5+) years of coating/painting quality control or inspection experience with a degree, or eight (8+) years with a diploma
  • Recognized coating inspection certification preferred:
    • NACE / AMPP CIP Level 2
    • BGAS-CSWIP Grade 2 (Level 2)
    • FROSIO Coating Inspector Level 2
  • Knowledge of international standards and specifications such as:
    • SSPC
    • NACE/AMPP
    • ISO 8501-1/2/3
    • ISO 12944
    • ASTM standards related to coating inspection, HDG (Hot-Dip Galvanizing), PFP (Passive Fire Protection)
  • Experience in fabrication yards, offshore construction, shipbuilding, oil & gas, petrochemical, marine, or industrial projects preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of coating inspection instruments and test equipment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and inspection reporting systems
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, codes and standards, coating specifications, procedures, and inspection documentation
  • Strong communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills
