At Rize, we are building the digital infrastructure powering the future of sustainable rice cultivation across Southeast Asia.
Rice farming supports the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers, yet it is also one of the world's largest contributors to methane emissions, accounting for nearly 12% of global methane emissions and close to 30% across Southeast Asia. The transition toward modern, measurable, and lower-emission farming is no longer optional. It is inevitable.
Rize exists to accelerate that transition.
Founded through a joint venture between Temasek, 100x100 (Previously Wavemaker Impact), Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and GenZero, Rize combines climate technology, agricultural intelligence, and last-mile operational infrastructure to help make rice cultivation more productive, resilient, and sustainable. As we scale across Indonesia - unlocking climate and green financing facilities, building partner and supplier networks, and operating at the last mile with farmers - the legal function sits at the centre of how we grow safely.
What We Are Building
A technology platform that enables large-scale sustainable rice farming through:
- Field operations and task management
- Cultivation and farm activity tracking across millions of hectares of paddy fields
- Agricultural data capture and verification
- Agri-input supply chain management
- Access to financing and third-party agricultural services
- Climate and sustainability reporting infrastructure
Our Mission
- Decarbonise rice agriculture: eliminate 100 megatons of carbon emissions by 2040
- Improve farmer livelihoods: increase yields, reduce cost-to-farm, and improve access to financing
- Build trusted agricultural infrastructure: create a scalable and verifiable platform for sustainable farming practices
Where We Operate
- Indonesia (Java Island and expansion regions)
Why Join Rize
This is an in-house seat with real impact. You will own the full spectrum of disputes and litigation risk for a business that operates at the last mile — commercial and contractual disputes, debt recovery, land and tenure matters, employment disputes, and regulatory investigations. You will report directly to the Head of Legal, with direct exposure to leadership and to the external litigation counsel you instruct.
For a litigator coming out of a disputes practice, this is the move in-house without stepping away from the sharp end: you set strategy on live matters, decide what we fight and what we settle, and manage the counsel who take it to court or arbitration — across a business that bridges smallholder rice farmers to livelihood improvements.

Key Responsibilities
Dispute Strategy & Management
- Own the end-to-end lifecycle of disputes and litigation across the Indonesian business - assessment, strategy, execution, and resolution
- Maintain a litigation and dispute risk register and rely on the register to:
- spot recurring dispute types early and design playbooks that resolve them faster and at lower cost; and
- recommend to the Head of Legal what we pursue, what we settle, and what we avoid — and build the commercial case behind each call
- determine what we handle internally or appoint external counsel for
Debt Recovery & Collections
- Run every aspect of the legal side of debt recovery and collections — from demand through enforcement — working with the Collections and Finance teams
- Structure recovery approaches proportionate to the amount at stake, including:
- structuring recovery and settlement approach; and
- drafting settlement agreements.
Pre-Litigation & Early Resolution
- Assess exposure before a matter escalates, and push for negotiated resolution where it protects the business
- Draft and negotiate settlement agreements, legal demands, and pre-litigation correspondence
Operational & Field Risk
- Work with Operations, Finance, and Operations Excellence teams to identify litigation and fraud risk in how the business runs on the ground, and design controls that reduce exposure
- Support internal investigations, including field-level fraud
Business Partnering
- Act as first point of contact for commercial teams on dispute-related questions, with clear, practical answers rather than caveats
- Escalate what genuinely needs the Head of Legal's attention, and close out the rest independently
Managing External Counsel
- Instruct, brief, and manage external litigation counsel end to end — scope the mandate, drive strategy, control spend, and hold quality
- Stay close enough to each matter to own the outcome, not just relay it
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in law (S.H.) from an Indonesian university, with a strong academic record
- Active PERADI membership - you will be required to attend court proceedings and act as the organisation’s attorney-at-law.
- Over 6 years of post-qualification experience, comprising at least 4 years at a law firm with a strong litigation/dispute resolution practice. In-house experience at a company is a plus
- First-hand experience with disputes through Indonesian courts and/or arbitration (e.g. BANI, SIAC), whether run directly or through external counsel
- Demonstrated managerial-level standing: associate level or above in a law firm setting, or junior/assistant manager or above in a company
- A clear, upward career trajectory with increasing scope and responsibility
- Strong drafting and advocacy skills across pleadings, submissions, and settlement documentation
- Fluent written and spoken Bahasa Indonesia and English - court and dispute work here runs in Bahasa Indonesia; you will also work and negotiate in English
Must have:
- Active member of the Indonesian Bar Association (PERADI)
- Sound litigation judgement - you know which matters to fight, which to settle, and can defend the call commercially
- Technical knowledge in the following areas of law:
- Criminal law and criminal procedural law: 8/10
- Civil law and civil procedural law: 8/10
- Ability to run multiple live matters and manage external counsel without constant supervision
- High ownership, and the temperament to stay calm and decisive under contentious, high-stakes pressure
- Comfort with ambiguity and incomplete information; facts arrive late and messy, and you act on what you have
- Willingness to go to and remain in the field. Understanding how paddy operations actually work will make you materially better at assessing and resolving disputes
- Clear, direct communication with non-lawyers
Nice to have:
- Master's degree in law, business, or economics
- Experience in agribusiness, FMCG, logistics, trade, or technology
- Experience with debt recovery, land/tenure disputes, or employment litigation
- Experience in a high-growth startup environment
