Job summary

Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) is seeking a Carpenter to support the physical plants across HRCE buildings in Nova Scotia. The role covers installation, repairs, preventive maintenance, upgrades and renovations to structural, architectural and finish components.

The ideal candidate will have a Grade 12 or GED, a Nova Scotia Carpenter qualification, at least five years in the trade with two in building maintenance, and a valid NS driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Certification of Qualification as Carpenter (Nova Scotia) required.
• Minimum 5 years in the trade with at least 2 years in building maintenance.
• Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Physical and mechanical aptitude for maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

• Perform carpentry work for installation, repair, maintenance, upgrades and renovations to building components.
• Work on structural, architectural and finish building components across HRCE facilities.
• Troubleshoot and apply mechanical aptitude to maintenance tasks.
• Report to the Regional Manager and take direction from on-duty maintenance supervisors.

Job description

Classification: Trades 2 – NSUPE

Carpenters are members of the Nova Scotia Union of Public & Private Employees, Local 2. The NSUPE Collective Agreement can be accessed HERE.

The Carpenter contributes to the effective operation of the Physical Plants within the Halifax Regional Centre for Education and implements the principles of good energy management stewardship. Responsible for all carpentry work involved in installation, repair, preventive maintenance, upgrades and renovations to structural, architectural and finish building components on all buildings owned and operated by the HRCE. These duties include work requiring competence in carpentry, physical capability, troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude. The position reports to the Regional Manager and takes direction during shifts from on duty maintenance supervisors.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 High School Diploma or academic equivalent through educational programs such as General Educational Development (GED);
• Certification of Qualification as a Carpenter recognized by Province of Nova Scotia;

(c ) Minimum (5) years experience in the trade with a minimum of two (2) years in a building maintenance environment;

• Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and satisfactory driving record;
• Physical and mechanical aptitude to perform a full range of maintenance and manual tasks
