DESTEN Inc. is a US-based lithium-ion battery technology and solutions company. Our innovations span the entire cell and battery pack infrastructure: material innovation and application, advanced cell structures, production process innovations, and the hardware and software needed to realize ultra-fast charging in high-power applications.
The role:
We are hiring a Battery Management System (BMS) Engineer to own all BMS-related matters on our battery projects. We work with an external BMS supplier rather than developing our own, and this role is the technical link between that supplier, our clients and our internal teams. You will be the BMS expert our clients deal with directly.
You will work with our engineering and manufacturing teams in Shandong, mainland China, and with client engineering teams internationally.
What you will do:
- Act as DESTEN's single point of contact with our BMS supplier on technical, schedule and quality matters.
- Translate client and internal requirements into clear BMS specifications and change requests, and review supplier deliverables: firmware releases, design documents, test reports, DBC files, calibration and safety documentation.
- Be the client-facing BMS expert in technical queries, interface discussions, design reviews, integration and commissioning.
- Ensure the BMS is correctly matched to DESTEN cells and packs, including protection limits, SOC/SOH calibration, fast-charge profiles and thermal limits.
- Define, witness and review BMS validation testing, and lead root-cause analysis of BMS issues in testing, production and the field, driving fixes through the supplier.
- Manage BMS firmware versions and parameter sets with full traceability across builds and client deliveries.
- Ensure the supplier's BMS supports functional safety (ISO 26262) and pack certification (e.g. UN 38.3, IEC 62133, IEC 62619, GB 38031, UN ECE R100).
- Report BMS status, risks and decisions to project management.
What you will bring:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic or Computer Engineering or a related field. Master's preferred.
- At least 3 years' experience working with BMS for lithium-ion battery systems in EV, e-mobility, energy storage or related sectors, at a BMS supplier, OEM or pack integrator.
- Experience as the technical interface between suppliers and clients strongly preferred.
- Solid understanding of BMS functions: cell monitoring, SOC/SOH/SOP estimation, balancing, protection, contactor and pre-charge control, insulation monitoring.
- Hands-on with CAN/CAN FD tools (e.g. Vector CANoe, PCAN) for logging, diagnostics and flashing; working knowledge of J1939 and UDS.
- Able to read DBC files, schematics, firmware release notes and test reports, and analyze test data in Python or MATLAB.
- Knowledge of lithium-ion cell electrochemistry (e.g. NMC, LFP), thermal behavior, safety and degradation.
- Excellent written and spoken English, as you will work directly with international clients.
- Fluent Mandarin (Putonghua). Cantonese an advantage.
- Confident communicator who can hold a supplier to account on quality, timing and scope while keeping the relationship strong.
- Embedded software or BMS hardware design experience an advantage, though not required.
Location and travel:
- Based in Hong Kong. Must have the right to work in Hong Kong.
- Regular travel to our Shandong facility and to supplier and client sites as required.
Our values:
Trust, innovation, courage and responsibility.
