Applications are invited from enthusiastic and self-motivated HCPC-registered Clinical Scientists (cancer genomics or molecular) to join the Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Department.

The successful applicant will need to have experience of working within a diagnostic cancer genomics laboratory and have a strong understanding of cancer genomics. The candidate must have excellent genomic analysis skills with experience of analysing a range of cancer types. Experience of NGS and WGS analysis and reporting is advantageous. The post holder will be required to participate on the duty scientist rota and will contribute to the maintenance of the quality management system. The post holder will be trained in the analysis and reporting of whole genome sequencing (WGS) as part of the nationally commissioned WGS service

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership was formed in May 2021. Between 2021 and 2024 the Partnership undertook a complex transformation programme to establish a single network of laboratories, underpinned by a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and single Quality Management System (QMS).

The Partnership has a main hub laboratory at the Royal London Hospital and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at the six other hospital sites served by the Partnership.

The Partnership has three operational divisions:

Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry

Microbiology and Virology

Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics

The 2024/25 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £121m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 860 WTE.

• BSc in an appropriate Biological Science (1st or 2nd class)
• HCPC Registration as a Clinical Scientist
• FRCPath part 1 or MSc in Haem/Onc/Genetics

• Significant experience (in excess of 3 years) of working in a diagnostic molecular laboratory
• Experience and competence in writing clinical diagnostic reports
• Experience of laboratory management and supervisory work
• Experience of working in a UKAS accredited NHS laboratory
• Experience of teaching undergraduate / postgraduate students and clinical staff
• Experience of analysing and reporting whole genome sequencing data in cancer patients

• Detailed understanding of molecular pathology of acquired disease
• Specialist knowledge of haematological disorders and solid cancers including theoretical understanding of other diagnostic specialities involved in patient diagnosis and management
• Knowledge of quality management systems and ISO15189 standards
• Awareness of current legislation and national policies affecting the NHS and genetic testing

• Able to undertake advanced molecular pathology techniques including analysis and reporting.
• Able to assess new techniques and apply them to the diagnostic situation
• Computer literate and competent in using patient information systems and audit tools
• Experience of using bioinformatics tools to analyse and interpret complex genetic data

• Awareness of scientific developments and modern technology in discipline and how they may influence the future of Pathology
