An exciting opportunity has become available for an enthusiastic, motivated Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion sections of Blood Sciences at University Hospitals Dorset. We are seeking a professional, reliable, innovative, and flexible Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and hardworking team. The department offers full training and development opportunities for the right candidates to enhance their skills and career ambitions.
The Haematology & Blood Transfusion department is part of the Blood Sciences department at University Hospitals Dorset. The post is based at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital, with rotations to our laboratory in Poole. Our modern departments provide a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities for Poole, Bournemouth, and Christchurch Hospitals, as well as local GP practices. The department is fully UKAS accredited and an IBMS accredited training laboratory.
The successful candidate will rotate through all sections of the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department and participate in the 24/7 shift system.
Ideal candidates will hold a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, be registered with the HCPC as a BMS, and have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio (Haematology) or possess equivalent proven experience at Band 6 level in Haematology/Blood Transfusion. Evidence of CPD will be required at interview. Candidates completing their Specialist Portfolio may be considered but would start at Band 5 and be promoted upon portfolio completion.
Our team is equipped with advanced analysers including Beckman Coulter DxH 900s, Starrsed RS ESR analyser, TOSOH G11 for HPLC, and Sta R Max coagulation analysers. The Haematology department is renowned for chronic blood disorder expertise, including CLL and MDS. The Coagulation department supports a comprehensive haemophilia service and offers a full range of tests.
The Transfusion department actively contributes to NHSBT pilots and steering groups, including being one of four full sites for the Integrated Stock Management Scheme. It offers opportunities to contribute to clinical trials and has a keen interest in patient blood management, supported by full automation and blood tracking systems.
Our values as #TeamUHD underpin our approach to patient care and teamwork. UHD is investing in service development across the Trust, with some services relocating due to the New Hospital Programme. Interviewers will address any questions regarding site moves during the interview.
Please note, if the role involves relocation, employees will not be eligible for excess mileage reimbursement, as travel from home to the new site will be considered a normal commute. Other changes will be managed per Trust or national policies.
