We’re scaling fast at The Big Phone Store, and we're looking for experienced Backend Developers who are passionate about clean code, building performant APIs, and shipping features that matter. You’ll be joining a team of hands-on coders who eat, sleep, and breathe tech, and we’re looking for others who do the same.
This is a full-time, permanent position. Remote candidates are welcome, and UK-based developers can choose a hybrid setup.
About the Role
You’ll help architect and maintain scalable backend systems and APIs that support our growing eCommerce operations and custom in-house tools. You’ll collaborate closely with frontend developers, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver value quickly and sustainably.
What You'll Do:
• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend features using PHP 7.4 and Laravel 8.4
• Build APIs and integrations with services like Redis, RabbitMQ, and ElasticSearch
• Collaborate with frontend engineers using Vue.js and Nuxt.js
• Optimize code for speed, security, and maintainability
• Write tests and debug issues across multiple environments
• Take ownership of tasks and projects, managing priorities independently
• Help shape technical decisions and architecture with the team

What We're Looking For:
• 2+ years of experience with Laravel and PHP-based backend development
• Strong experience building and consuming APIs
• Solid understanding of SQL databases and database optimization
• Familiarity with queues, caching, and background processing (e.g., Redis, Horizon, RabbitMQ)
• Ability to work independently and as part of a close-knit team
• Strong communication skills — written and verbal
• A passion for clean, readable code and continuous learning
Bonus Points For:
• Experience with ElasticSearch or App Search
• Knowledge of OAuth2 / Laravel Passport
• Familiarity with Laravel DevOps tools (Telescope, Envoy)
• Prior remote work or startup experience
