Job summary

Teaching Personnel in St Helens is seeking an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant for a welcoming mainstream primary school. You will provide consistent 1:1 support to a Year 4 pupil who needs help with classroom engagement, emotional regulation and accessing learning.

You will work closely with the class teacher and SENCO, following the pupil's individual support plan to help develop confidence and independence, contributing to a stable, long-term placement through July 2027.

Qualifications

  • Experience providing 1:1 support to a pupil with SEND in a school or similar setting.
  • Understanding autism, ADHD, SEMH or emotional regulation needs.
  • Calm, patient and consistent approach to pupil needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day.
  • Aid access to English, maths and wider curriculum lessons.
  • Break instructions into manageable steps for learning.
  • Use visual prompts and regulation strategies to support engagement.
  • Support transitions between lessons and activities.
  • Encourage positive behaviour, confidence and independence.
  • Deliver targeted interventions when required.
  • Monitor pupil engagement and report to teacher/SENCO.

Job description

Location: St Helens
Start date: November 2026
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 3:30pm
Contract: Full-time, initially until July 2027

I’m recruiting an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant for a welcoming mainstream primary school in St Helens.

The role involves providing consistent 1:1 support to a pupil in Year 4 who needs additional help with classroom engagement, emotional regulation and accessing learning. You’ll work closely with the class teacher and SENCO, following the pupil’s individual support plan and helping them develop confidence and independence.

This is a full-time, long-term position for someone who can offer the pupil stability and commit to the school until at least July 2027.

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day
  • Helping the pupil access English, maths and wider curriculum lessons
  • Breaking instructions and activities into manageable steps
  • Using visual prompts, movement breaks and agreed regulation strategies
  • Supporting transitions between lessons and activities
  • Encouraging positive behaviour, confidence and independence
  • Delivering short, targeted interventions where required
  • Monitoring engagement and sharing feedback with the teacher and SENCO
  • Supporting the pupil during less structured parts of the day
  • Building a positive, consistent and trusting relationship
  • Has experience supporting pupils with SEND in a school or relevant setting
  • Understands autism, ADHD, SEMH or emotional regulation needs
  • Is calm, patient and consistent
  • Can respond confidently when a pupil becomes overwhelmed
  • Understands when to provide support and when to encourage independence
  • Works well with teachers, SENCOs and other support staff
  • Is reliable and able to commit to a long-term role

A Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification would be desirable. However, applicants with strong experience in SEND, youth work, residential care or children’s support will also be considered.
