Job summary

Kier Group is recruiting Winter Drivers to join our Transportation team across Northamptonshire. You will drive a gritter on public highways on an on-call basis, supporting winter service across contracts in Northamptonshire, with full training provided toward a winter service NVQ.

You must hold an HGV licence with CPC accreditation, be flexible to cover a rotating on-call schedule (including evenings, weekends and bank holidays) and able to commute to the designated depots in Brixworth,

Qualifications

• HGV licence and CPC accreditation are required.
• Flexibility to work on an on-call rota including evenings and weekends.
• Willingness to travel to depots in Brixworth, Wellingborough or Towcester.

Responsibilities

• Drive a gritter on designated routes across public highways.
• Work to an on-call rota covering AM/PM shifts, including evenings, mornings, weekends and holidays.
• Respond to call-outs within 30 minutes, attend allocated depot locations.
• Maintain accurate records including drivers' hours books and report vehicle defects.
• Clean and maintain vehicle after routes.

Contract

Fixed term zero hour contract to April 2025 - Flexible days / nights - Call out & weather dependant

Salary

£22.50 per hour - Weekly pay + Standby of £17.55 per shift Monday to Friday / £35.09 per shift Saturday and Sunday

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of our Winter Service team during the 2026/2027 winter season. You'll be working on an on-call basis, driving a gritter on the public highway on our Northamptonshire contracts. With competitive rates of pay including standby pay and enhanced weekend rates, you'll play a vital role in keeping our roads safe during winter conditions. This role offers a wonderful opportunity to develop new skills, with full training provided towards a winter service NVQ qualification.

What will you be responsible for?

• Driving a gritter on designated routes across the public highway, using the latest navigation technology
• Working to an on-call rota covering AM or PM shifts, including evenings, early mornings, weekends and bank holidays
• Responding to call-outs within 30 minutes, attending your allocated depot (Brixworth, Wellingborough or Towcester)
• Maintaining accurate records including drivers' hours books and reporting vehicle defects electronically
• Cleaning and maintaining your vehicle upon completion of routes

What are we looking for?

• You can drive and hold a current HGV licence
• Have CPC accreditation
• You're flexible, enthusiastic and able to commit to the on-call rota and shift patterns
