Job summary

NHS Scotland is seeking a qualified wheelchair technician to join the Assistive Technology (Wheelchair and Seating) team at Ninewells Hospital. The role is full-time and based mainly in the wheelchair workshop with some clinic support, operating 36 hours per week.

Applicants should have an HNC or NVQ/SVQ in mechanical engineering or City & Guilds, plus an engineering apprenticeship and strong workshop skills. Training in assistive tech will be provided where needed.

Qualifications

• Requires HNC or NVQ/SVQ in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering levels 2 and 3 or City & Guilds in mechanical engineering; apprenticeship preferred.
• Extensive hands-on engineering experience with fault finding and use of workshop equipment.
• Knowledge of wheelchairs is advantageous but not essential; role offers skill development in assistive technology.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced technician to join the multi-disciplinary Assistive Technology (Wheelchair and Seating) team based within the TORT Centre at Ninewells Hospital. This is a full-time permanent position.

Wheelchair technicians prepare new wheelchairs for issue to patients, repair and maintain a wide range of manual and powered wheelchairs as well as specialist postural systems. They also provide technical assistance during the assessment, design, manufacture and delivery of specialist rehabilitation equipment including wheelchairs and seating systems.

The Assistive Technology Service provides long-term wheelchair and seating solutions to people from across Tayside and is critical to supporting independent living and improving quality of life for people with mobility and postural needs.

The successful candidate will have a HNC or NVQ/SVQ in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering levels 2 and 3 or City & Guilds in mechanical engineering and completed an appropriate engineering apprenticeship. They will have extensive hands‑on engineering experience, possess logical fault finding skills and be competent in the use of workshop machines and fabrication equipment.

Contemporary practical knowledge of wheelchairs would be an advantage but not essential as for the candidate with appropriate technical experience there will be opportunities to develop new skills in the field of assistive technology. Working with a team of technicians and clinical specialists, the role is primarily based within the wheelchair workshop but also provides technical support to patient clinics within Ninewells hospital.

Competency will be demonstrated through evidence of qualifications, and formal interview.
