Job summary

AM Healthcare Group in Leicester is seeking a Rehabilitation Engineer Technician to join our wheelchair clinical team. You will assess, prescribe, and adjust posture and mobility equipment, including seating and wheelchairs, for children and adults with severe disabilities.

You will work in a clinical and technical capacity, supporting patient care, documentation, and training for patients and carers, with emphasis on safety and personalised care.

Qualifications

• GCSE maths and English at grade 4 or above, or equivalent.
• NVQ level 3 in a relevant field, or equivalent qualification/experience.
• Relevant clinical or practical experience in wheelchair provision or assistive device design.
• HNC or HND in engineering or equivalent.
• Level 4 qualification or higher in engineering discipline.
• Previous NHS Wheelchair Service experience.
• Moving and Handling Training.

Responsibilities

• Carry out basic wheelchair and seating assessments and interventions.
• Support assessment and review of complex mobility and postural needs.
• Assist with safe positioning and handling during assessment and fitting to achieve the best clinical outcome.
• Document assessment and review outcomes accurately.
• Take delegated responsibility for a variety of tasks within clinical service provision as directed by the senior rehabilitation engineer technician/clinical lead.
• Modify, assemble and adjust equipment before or during handover as required, following manufacturer guidance and completing appropriate documentation, testing, inspection and risk management.
• Support equipment handovers; demonstrating correct use; providing training to the patient and stakeholders; confirming suitability and effectiveness; and making adjustments to optimise fit and function.
• Contribute to service delivery and development activities, supporting quality improvement, work to comply with H&S, IPC and PPE requirements.

Rehabilitation Engineer Technician – Wheelchairs – Leicester

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Rehabilitation Engineer Technician to join our wheelchair clinical team in Leicester.

As a Rehabilitation Engineer Technician, you will work in a clinical and technical capacity, supporting patient care during the assessment and prescription of posture and mobility equipment. This includes specialist seating, manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs, buggies, and associated accessories including specialist controls.

The service supports children and adults with severe disabilities, most living with long-term conditions; many are deteriorating, some rapidly, including those in the terminal phase. The role requires a flexible, person-centred approach.

Key Responsibilities:

• Carry out basic wheelchair and seating assessments and interventions.
• Support the assessment and review of complex mobility and postural needs for people with severe disability.
• Assist with safe positioning and handling during assessment and fitting to achieve the best clinical outcome.
• Document assessment and review outcomes accurately.
• Take delegated responsibility for a variety of tasks within clinical service provision as directed by the senior rehabilitation engineer technician/clinical lead, e.g. receiving and organising equipment, decontamination and organisation of cushions and wheelchair accessories, making adjustments, adaptations and modifications.
• Modify, assemble and adjust equipment before or during handover as required, following manufacturer guidance and completing appropriate documentation, testing, inspection and risk management.
• Support equipment handovers; demonstrating correct use; providing training to the patient and stakeholders (e.g., carers); confirming suitability and effectiveness; and making adjustments to optimise fit and function.
• Contribute to service delivery and development activities, supporting quality improvement, work to comply with H&S, IPC and PPE requirements.

Skills and Experience:

• Empathy and patient-centred focus – ability to understand users’ physical and emotional needs to design effective, comfortable mobility solutions.
• Strong problem-solving skills – capable of assessing complex mobility challenges and developing practical, adaptive engineering solutions.
• Good attention to detail – ensuring precision in measurements, fittings, and adjustments for comfort, safety, and performance.
• Technical competence – solid understanding of biomechanics, assistive technology, and engineering principles relevant to wheelchair design and rehabilitation.
• Effective communication – able to collaborate with patients, clinicians, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure appropriate and successful outcomes.
• Strong time management and organisational skills.
• Experience of use of electronic patient record systems.
• Creativity and innovation – ability to think beyond standard designs to create customized mobility solutions for diverse user needs.
• Adaptability and flexibility – willingness to adjust approaches based on changing patient conditions, technologies, or clinical requirements.
• Commitment to continuous learning – staying updated with advances in assistive technology, rehabilitation practices, and materials.

Qualifications:

• GCSE maths and English at grade 4 or above, or equivalent
• NVQ level 3 in an area relevant to the post, or equivalent qualification and/or experience
• Relevant clinical or practical experience in wheelchair provision, rehabilitation services, or assistive device design and assessment
• HNC or HND in engineering or equivalent
• Level 4 qualification or higher in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Previous experience in NHS Wheelchair Service
• Moving and Handling Training
