Job summary

NHS Tayside invites applications for an experienced technician to join the Assistive Technology (Wheelchair and Seating) team at the TORT Centre, Ninewells Hospital. This is a full-time permanent position.

You will prepare wheelchairs, repair and maintain manual and powered models and assist in assessment, design, manufacture and delivery of equipment for mobility and postural needs. The role is based in the wheelchair workshop with clinical support duties.

Qualifications

• HNC or NVQ/SVQ Level 2/3 in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering or City & Guilds in mechanical engineering with an appropriate apprenticeship.
• Extensive hands-on engineering experience.
• Logical fault finding skills and competence with workshop machines and fabrication equipment.
• Wheelchair knowledge is advantageous, with opportunity to develop skill in assistive technology.

Responsibilities

• Prepare new wheelchairs for issue to patients and repair/maintain manual and powered wheelchairs and seating systems.
• Provide technical assistance during the assessment, design, manufacture and delivery of specialist rehabilitation equipment.
• Work primarily in the wheelchair workshop and provide technical support to patient clinics at Ninewells hospital.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced technician to join the multi-disciplinary Assistive Technology (Wheelchair and Seating) team based within the TORT Centre at Ninewells Hospital. This is a full-time permanent position.

Wheelchair technicians prepare new wheelchairs for issue to patients, repair and maintain a wide range of manual and powered wheelchairs as well as specialist postural systems. They also provide technical assistance during the assessment, design, manufacture and delivery of specialist rehabilitation equipment including wheelchairs and seating systems.

The Assistive Technology Service provides long-term wheelchair and seating solutions to people from across Tayside and is critical to supporting independent living and improving quality of life for people with mobility and postural needs.

The successful candidate will have a HNC or NVQ/SVQ in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering levels 2 and 3 or City & Guilds in mechanical engineering and completed an appropriate engineering apprenticeship. They will have extensive hands-on engineering experience, possess logical fault finding skills and be competent in the use of workshop machines and fabrication equipment.

Contemporary practical knowledge of wheelchairs would be an advantage but not essential as for the candidate with appropriate technical experience there will be opportunities to develop new skills in the field of assistive technology. Working with a team of technicians and clinical specialists, the role is primarily based within the wheelchair workshop but also provides technical support to patient clinics within Ninewells hospital.

Competency will be demonstrated through evidence of qualifications, and formal interview.

You will be required to comply with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers in Scotland throughout your employment.
