Job summary

TWI Ltd in Cambridge invites an experienced Welding Engineer to join our Arc Welding & Engineering (AWE) team. You will provide expert welding consultancy, deliver projects and develop practical solutions across defence, energy and manufacturing sectors, including welding process qualification and additive manufacturing.

The role is hybrid (minimum 3 days on site), full-time 36 hours, with opportunities to work across international projects and contribute to innovative technologies.

Qualifications

• An EWF/IIW Welding Engineer Diploma (or equivalent).
• A degree‑level qualification in Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgy or a related discipline.
• Significant industrial experience in welding engineering.

Responsibilities

• Providing expert welding engineering advice and consultancy to industrial clients.
• Managing and delivering projects to agreed technical, commercial and quality objectives.
• Supporting customers with welding reviews, problem-solving and technical investigations.
• Developing and validating welding and additive manufacturing processes.
• Supporting short‑notice site‑based technical activities where required.
• Working collaboratively with colleagues across engineering, materials and manufacturing disciplines.
• Building strong customer relationships and identifying future project opportunities.
• Contributing to the development of innovative technologies, including robotic welding and additive manufacturing.

At TWI, you'll work with organisations operating in the defence, energy, manufacturing and infrastructure sectors, delivering innovative welding solutions to complex engineering challenges. This role offers a unique combination of technical consultancy, project delivery and technology development, covering areas such as welding process qualification, manufacturing support, robotics and additive manufacturing.

About the Role

Our Arc Welding & Engineering (AWE) Section delivers consultancy, research and technology development projects for customers around the world.

As we continue to grow across sectors such as defence, energy and electrification, we're looking for an experienced Welding Engineer to join our team.

As a TWI Welding Engineer, you'll play a key role in supporting customers, delivering projects and developing practical engineering solutions to real‑world challenges.

What You’ll Bring

• An EWF/IIW Welding Engineer Diploma (or equivalent).
• A degree‑level qualification in Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgy or a related discipline.
• Significant industrial experience in welding engineering.

Essential Experience

• Arc welding processes and their deployment within industry.
• Supporting the implementation of new welding processes and technologies.
• Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), qualification and welding coordination activities.
• Weld inspection and testing methods.
• Industry codes and standards, including ASME, EN ISO, API or similar.
• Identifying technical challenges and developing practical engineering solutions.

You’ll also be able to

• Analyse technical problems and develop effective solutions through engineering knowledge, experimentation and process development.
• Plan and manage projects effectively to achieve delivery targets.
• Communicate confidently with customers and colleagues in both written and verbal formats.
• Build relationships and identify business development opportunities through technical discussions.
