Job summary

TWI Ltd in Cambridge is seeking an experienced Welding Engineer to join the Arc Welding & Engineering (AWE) team. You will deliver consultancy, manage projects and develop welding processes across defence, energy, manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.

The role combines technical advisory work with hands-on project delivery, including welding procedure qualification, fabrication support, robotics and additive manufacturing.

Qualifications

• Engineering degree in a related field (Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgy) and an EWF/IIW Welding Engineer Diploma (or equivalent).
• Significant industrial experience in welding engineering and knowledge of welding codes/standards.
• Experience with welding procedure specifications (WPS) and welding coordination is desirable.

• Provide expert welding engineering consultancy to industrial clients.
• Manage and deliver projects to agreed technical, commercial and quality objectives.
• Support customers with welding reviews, problem-solving and technical investigations.
• Develop and validate welding and additive manufacturing processes.
• Assist with short-notice site-based technical activities as required.
• Collaborate with colleagues across engineering, materials and manufacturing disciplines.
• Build strong customer relationships and identify future project opportunities.

About the Role

Our Arc Welding & Engineering (AWE) Section delivers consultancy, research and technology development projects for customers around the world. As we continue to grow across sectors such as defence, energy and electrification, we’re looking for an experienced Welding Engineer to join our team.

As a TWI Welding Engineer, you’ll play a key role in supporting customers, delivering projects and developing practical engineering solutions to real-world challenges.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing expert welding engineering advice and consultancy to industrial clients.
• Managing and delivering projects to agreed technical, commercial and quality objectives.
• Supporting customers with welding reviews, problem-solving and technical investigations.
• Developing and validating welding and additive manufacturing processes.
• Supporting short-notice site-based technical activities where required.

What You’ll Bring

We’re looking for an experienced engineer with a strong technical foundation and a passion for solving complex engineering challenges.

You will ideally have:

• An EWF/IIW Welding Engineer Diploma (or equivalent).
• A degree-level qualification in Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgy or a related discipline.
• Significant industrial experience in welding engineering.

Essential Experience

You will have knowledge and experience in:

• Arc welding processes and their deployment within industry.
• Supporting the implementation of new welding processes and technologies.
• Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), qualification and welding coordination activities.
• Weld inspection and testing methods.
• Industry codes and standards, including ASME, EN ISO, API or similar.
• Identifying technical challenges and developing practical engineering solutions.

You’ll also be able to:

• Analyse technical problems and develop effective solutions through engineering knowledge, experimentation and process development.
• Plan and manage projects effectively to achieve delivery targets.
• Communicate confidently with customers and colleagues in both written and verbal formats.
• Build relationships and identify business development opportunities through technical discussions.

Security Clearance:

Some projects require security clearance. Candidates who are eligible to obtain the appropriate level of clearance may have access to a wider range of projects and customers. Support and guidance will be provided where clearance is required.

Travel :

This position may require regular travel both in the UK and abroad.

Working hours:
