Job summary

National Gas is recruiting for a Welder/Fitter's Mate to support welding and pipe fitting activities within our fabrication teams. You will prepare pipework, assist with measuring, and help ensure safety, quality, and efficiency on both workshop and site tasks.

Working alongside experienced trades, you will follow a structured development pathway towards becoming a skilled Welder or Pipe Fitter, contributing from day one to project readiness and reliability.

Qualifications

• GCSEs or equivalent in English and Mathematics.
• NVQ Level 2 or 3 or apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Experience in utilities, gas transmission, pipelines, pressure systems, engineering, or construction.
• Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment.
• Full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Support Welders and Pipe Fitters to prepare and assemble pipework, fabricated components, and mechanical equipment.
• Prepare materials for welding through measuring, marking out, grinding, bevelling, machining, cleaning, alignment, and fit-up.
• Support accurate measurement and dimensional checks for fabrication, installation, and tie-in work.
• Prepare and control the tools, materials, consumables, and equipment needed for workshop and site activities.
• Support inspection, testing, and quality checks under the guidance of experienced team members.
• Follow safe systems of work and maintain high standards of equipment care and workshop housekeeping.
• Build your welding and pipe fitting capability through practical training, mentoring, and competency development.
