Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and wastewater company. We make a daily difference to our 15 million customers by supplying 2.6 billion litres of water through 32,000 km of pipes, keeping taps flowing and toilets flushing.

At Thames Water, every action matters every day. Water is essential to life, so our business is always open.

What you’ll be doing as a Water Quality Technician

Every year, we carry out over 500,000 tests on samples of water collected from our treatment works, reservoirs, and customer properties to ensure high-quality drinking water.

  • Collect samples from treatment works, reservoirs, and customer addresses. This involves regular cold calling, requiring assurance and customer service skills. You will test these samples with equipment provided, including bottles, thermometers, and other relevant tools.
  • Manage and maintain sampling records and equipment to UKAS and DWI standards.
  • Plan your workload and deliver monitoring programs, liaising with various teams for technical data, regulatory, and reactive work, following company protocols.
  • Investigate possible supply issues, plan routes and collection schedules effectively.
  • Arrange appointments with customers, sample customer complaints, and participate in events.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours roster, including weekends, on a five-week rotation.
  • Driving is a significant part of this role; comfort with driving large vans is essential.
What you should bring to the role
  • Excellent customer service skills, as you will visit customers' homes on behalf of Thames Water.
  • Confidence in cold calling residential and commercial properties.
  • Organization and ability to work independently.
  • Attention to detail for record-keeping of samples.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the water industry and processes.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, and computer literacy.
  • Comfort driving large commercial vans, including in busy and rural environments.
  • A clean driving license; experience in route planning and efficient driving is preferred.
What’s in it for you?
  • Hourly Pay rate: £14.03
  • Location: Reading, RG2 0SF, primarily field-based around Thames Valley.
  • Duration: 26 weeks
  • Hours: 38 per week
  • Note: On assignment at Thames Water via Pertemps
