Job description

Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and wastewater company. We make a daily difference to our 15 million customers by supplying 2.6 billion litres of water through 32,000 km of pipes, keeping taps flowing and toilets flushing.

What you’ll be doing as a Water Quality Technician

Every year, we carry out over 500,000 tests on samples of water from our treatment works, reservoirs, and customer properties to ensure high-quality drinking water.

  • Collect samples from treatment works, reservoirs, and customer addresses. This involves regular cold calling, requiring strong customer service skills and assurance. You will test these samples with equipment provided, including bottles and thermometers.
  • Manage sampling records and equipment maintenance to UKAS and DWI standards.
  • Plan your workload and deliver monitoring programs, coordinating with various teams for technical data and reactive work, following company protocols.
  • Investigate potential supply issues, plan routes and collection schedules effectively.
  • Arrange customer appointments, handle sampling of customer complaints, and participate in events.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours roster, including weekends, on a five-week rotation.
  • Drive a large commercial van, often in busy city centers, rural areas, and enclosed estates.
What you should bring to the role
  • Excellent customer service skills for home visits.
  • Confidence in cold calling residential and commercial properties.
  • Organizational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Attention to detail for record keeping.
  • Willingness to learn about the water industry and processes.
  • Strong communication skills and computer literacy.
  • Comfort with driving a large vehicle and navigating various environments.
  • A clean driving license and good route planning skills.

  • Location: Reading, RG2 0SF, field-based around Thames Valley.
  • Duration: 26 weeks
