Job description

We are looking for a motivated and committed Ward Manager for one of our Male Acute Inpatient Wards within the Highgate Mental Health Campus in the Borough of Camden.

The role involves managing one of our 4 male acute wards. Currently, the Highgate West site has 8 acute wards and 2 PICUs, which also accommodate the MHCAS and Health Based Place of Safety.

The ward manager will have overall responsibility for the delivery of care within the ward, in accordance with Trust policies and procedures. The role includes leading a team of nursing staff to deliver high-quality, evidence-based practice, with regular supervision and appraisal. The manager will oversee administrative and operational resources efficiently, evaluate service standards, and coordinate multidisciplinary working to ensure effective communication and continuity of care across services.

There is an expectation that the post holder will prioritize the needs of service users. The Ward Manager should be a visible, accessible, and authoritative presence in the clinical area.

Main duties of the job

The role is open to qualified applicants registered with professional bodies such as Nursing, Occupational Therapy, or Social Work.

The role requires maintaining throughput and collaborating with bed management to ensure adherence to treatment pathways. We welcome creative and enthusiastic applicants committed to developing high-quality mental health care for service users in Camden, Islington, Barnet, Haringey, and Enfield. Our inpatient acute wards provide multidisciplinary assessment and treatment for individuals experiencing an acute phase of mental illness.

  • Applicants capable of using data and Quality Improvement methodologies to drive change.
  • Experienced in providing safe, professional care with good risk management awareness and knowledge of the Mental Health Act.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will lead and manage a multidisciplinary mental health team, ensuring service delivery aligns with operational policies and strategies, providing safe, effective, and culturally competent care. The role emphasizes trauma-informed approaches, optimal resource use, governance, and audit responsibilities. Supporting and developing team members, ensuring effective induction and integration, and performing other duties as assigned by the Matron are also key responsibilities.

Person Specification
Education
  • Diploma or degree leading to a professional registered qualification in Mental Health.
  • Evidence of recent or ongoing post-registration academic study relevant to practice.
  • Masters Degree in a related field.
  • Non-Medical Prescribing or AMHP Qualification.
Experience
  • Experience supporting staff through change and fostering continuous service improvement.
  • Effective workforce development, supervision, appraisal, and performance management experience.
  • Experience in audits and supporting research.
Skills
  • Strong leadership skills to motivate and involve teams.
  • Sound budget management skills.
  • Ability to influence change and utilize data for improvements.
