Job summary

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Band 5 HCPC Biomedical Scientist to join the Virology team at Blackpool Teaching Hospital. NHS lab experience is desirable; accredited Biomedical Science degree considered for registration portfolio progression.

The role involves identifying pathogens by PCR and analysing serology, with maintenance of automated systems (Alinity, Ingenius, Vidas, Cobas 4800).

Qualifications

• Accredited Biomedical Science degree is essential.
• Experience in a microbiology/virology clinical pathology laboratory desired.
• Understanding of health and safety legislation pertinent to clinical laboratories.
• Understanding of components of a quality management system.

Responsibilities

• Perform a range of laboratory tests autonomously and demonstrate understanding of the scientific basis for tests and disease processes.
• Be able to work on a shift rota, covering seven days a week.
• Use information technology for communication as appropriate.
• Direct more junior staff regarding technical and work issues.
• Answer telephone enquiries from nurses and clinicians and provide technical advice on results and service use.
• Record inventory management to ensure accurate stock control.
• Assist in effective verbal and written communication by qualified and unqualified staff.
• Report issues to the appropriate person.
