Job summary

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a 12-month post in the Virology laboratory. The role involves diagnosing infection using serological and molecular methods, examining samples like blood and CSF, and following SOPs to produce accurate reports.

HCPC registration is required and interviews are face to face. The ideal candidate will have a Biomedical Science degree, laboratory experience, and strong communication skills, with CPD desirable.

Qualifications

• Experience of working in a laboratory.
• HCPC registration is required.
• CPD is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Examining patient samples such as blood, respiratory samples and cerebrospinal fluid using manual and automated techniques
• Performing work strictly according to current Standard Operating Procedures to produce accurate and timely reports
• Safely handling blood, respiratory samples and other patient samples
• Ensuring reagents are prepared, stored and used according to manufacturer guidelines and laboratory procedures
• Ensuring preventative maintenance is carried out and recorded on laboratory instruments and equipment before use for patient investigations
• Performing manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations
• Measuring and monitoring the quality of laboratory investigations using internal and external quality procedures
• Taking corrective action when quality control or assurance shows loss of instrument or method performance
• Ensuring resources are used efficiently and effectively
• Carrying out first line trouble shooting of complex analytical equipment or methods and helping resolve equipment or method failures
