Reports to Managing Director

Role Summary and Purpose

The Veterans Regroup Caseworker provides person-centred information, advice and practical support to veterans and the wider Armed Forces Community in Cornwall, helping them navigate challenges, identify their priorities, understand their options, access appropriate services and improve their wellbeing. The role supports veterans and the wider Armed Forces Community with a wide range of issues, including welfare benefits, housing, finances, cost-of-living pressures, health and wellbeing, and access to community resources.

The postholder will deliver support through face-to-face appointments, telephone and digital support, outreach clinics, hospital and other healthcare settings, and community-based services. They will help create a welcoming, trauma-informed and supportive environment at the Truro VALOUR Hub and the network of multi-agency Armed Forces Hubs across Cornwall, meeting and greeting visitors, responding to enquiries and ensuring people are connected with the right support at the right time.

This is a varied and rewarding role that combines information and advice, advocacy, practical casework, partnership working, community outreach and relationship building to help veterans and the wider Armed Forces Community overcome challenges and improve their quality of life. While the role has a primary focus on advice provision, the postholder will also provide reasonable support with wider organisational and service activities when required.

Working as a Specialist in an Integrated Service

While this role has a clear specialist focus in advice work, many members of the Armed Forces Community we support are navigating multiple challenges at the same time. Someone seeking advice about benefits may also be caring for a loved one, experiencing loneliness, facing housing difficulties or looking for support to improve their wellbeing.

Working as part of the wider VALOUR team, the Caseworker will collaborate closely with Improving Lives Plymouth and other programme partners to provide a coordinated and joined-up experience for the people we support. The operating model is designed to reduce the need for people to repeat their story, minimise unnecessary handovers between services and ensure they are connected to the right support as quickly and seamlessly as possible.

As a Caseworker, you will not be expected to be an expert in everything. However, you will develop a good understanding of the wider services offered by partners, enabling you to respond to basic queries, identify additional support needs and help people access the most appropriate services. Alongside your specialist area of expertise, you will work as part of a wider integrated team, helping to ensure that people receive joined-up, person-centred support that reflects the reality of their lives.

Training and Professional Development

Veterans Regroup is committed to maintaining and strengthening the specialist nature of its Armed Forces Community services. Practitioners will receive induction, training, supervision and ongoing professional development to build their knowledge, skills and confidence over time. As experience and competence develop, Caseworkers may have opportunities to work more flexibly across different areas of the service, while always working within appropriate professional boundaries, supervision arrangements and agreed levels of responsibility.

For advice work, Caseworkers will initially work within their existing competence and agreed supervision arrangements, with complex or specialist matters referred or escalated appropriately. Through training and development, Caseworkers will be supported to gradually broaden and deepen their knowledge over time.
