Job description

Responsible to: Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Responsible for: Lead the day-to-day shipping operation, overseeing team workload, dispatch performance, international freight, customs documentation and carrier management while remaining hands‑on with shipment processing.

Job function

The Shipping Manager will lead the day-to-day shipping operation, overseeing team workload, dispatch performance, international freight, customs documentation and carrier management while remaining hands‑on with shipment processing.

Working closely with warehouse, production, sales, finance and trade compliance teams, the role will ensure accurate, timely and cost-effective deliveries, maintain regulatory standards, develop a flexible, cross‑trained team and drive continuous improvements in service, efficiency and freight costs across TXO's operations.

Specific responsibilities

The following outlines the primary areas of responsibility. Additional responsibilities or functions may be required as necessary to support the business.

Operational Delivery
  • Manage daily shipping priorities, team workload, service levels and dispatch performance, while directly preparing and processing shipments as part of the team.
  • Organise domestic and international collections, deliveries, freight bookings, shipment documentation and customs clearance coordination; resolve delays and exceptions promptly.
  • Ensure accurate and timely shipment records, carrier instructions, tracking, proof of delivery and customer communication, working within approved trade compliance procedures.
  • Build and maintain a cross‑trained and competency plan so all shipping colleagues can competently cover core processes, customers, systems and one another during absence or demand peaks.
  • Provide hands‑on coaching, performance feedback and clear operating standards, with particular focus on quality, accountability, safe working and service continuity.
  • Coordinate with warehouse, production, finance and customer‑facing teams to ensure goods, paperwork, shipment timing and invoicing information align.
  • Work closely with sales and account managers to understand customer deadlines, delivery commitments, Incoterms and special shipping requirements; proactively flag service or cost implications.
  • Partner with the Group Head of Trade Compliance to apply export licence, customs, classification and other regulatory requirements; escalated uncertainty and never substitute operational judgement for required compliance approval.
  • Own freight cost control, carrier performance and quotation comparisons; challenge unnecessary premium freight and identify consolidation, route, packaging and process savings.
  • Review shipment errors, delays, claims and exceptions; implement practical improvements to reduce rework, lead times and overall cost-to-serve.
  • Maintain meaningful KPIs covering on‑time dispatch/delivery, shipment accuracy, freight spend, cost per shipment, carrier performance, backlog and cross‑trained coverage.
  • Support consistent ways of working across TXO sites and share best practice with international shipping and operational colleagues.
About you
  • Strong practical experience of international shipping, freight forwarding, carrier management and import/export documentation.
  • Previous experience supervising or leading a shipping/logistics team, alongside a willingness and ability to process shipments personally every day.
  • Good working knowledge of Incoterms, customs processes and shipping systems, and clear understanding of when specialist trade compliance approval is required.
  • Demonstrable focus on improving service, eliminating inefficiency, negotiating or controlling freight costs and measuring operational performance.
  • Collaborative, calm under pressure, organised and accurate; able to develop colleagues and encourage a genuinely flexible, cross‑trained team.
