Breast Cancer Now is building a new UX team in London and seeking a design-led professional to lead interaction design, information architecture and prototyping. You’ll work with a small team reporting to the Head of UX, shaping the way users access health information and support.
Expect WCAG 2.2 AA compliance, inclusive design, and collaboration with clinical colleagues. Hybrid work up to 3 days remote from the London office, and a supportive learning budget.
We want everyone affected by breast cancer to get the right support, at the right time, in the right way. More and more of that happens digitally, and we know we’re not reaching everyone we could.
It matters because of who’s on the other side of the screen. Someone searching at 2am because they can’t sleep. Someone reading on their phone in a hospital corridor. They’re often exhausted, frightened and short of time, and they need to find the right thing quickly and trust it when they do.
We’re building a user experience team from scratch. You’d be one of the first three people in it, alongside a service designer and a user researcher, all reporting to our Head of UX, and you’d have a real say in how the team works.
For the first year or so, most of your time goes on the Universal Offer, a new strategic goal in our services team. That means a new information architecture for our health information, built around how people actually think; a conversational AI front door that’s honest about what it can’t do and never more than a step from a real person; and guided journeys for the moments that hit hardest, like diagnosis and the end of hospital treatment. A smaller but growing part of the role is fundraising, working with our supporter experience team so that the way we ask is honest and free of pressure.
A Head of UX who builds the team’s structure rather than leaving it to you, room to get on with things without sign-off, dedicated weekly learning time and a training budget, and generous experts in nursing, services and policy to learn from. This work means sitting with other people’s fear and grief, so there’s also space to talk after a difficult session.
We don’t expect anyone to be excellent at everything, and we won’t mark you down for telling us what you’re not good at yet. What matters is that you can hold a domain, build the thinking behind it, and be trusted to run with it.
Experience of conversational or AI-assisted interfaces, health or support contexts, or the charity sector.
We know not everyone applies for a job unless they tick every box. If you meet most of the essential criteria and this work speaks to you, we’d really like to hear from you.
The job description and our attractive benefits are available for you to download.
This role is primarily based in our London office. Our hybrid working model allows you to work up to 3 days per week at home.
The salary range is:
£47,000 to £52,000 based in London
We’re committed to promoting equity, valuing diversity and creating an inclusive environment – for everyone who works for us, works with us, supports us and who
we support.
